Kurapika stopped walking when he was overcome with a feeling of dread. A familiar, ugly, twisting feeling was gathering below his belly. A dull ache started to blossom between his hips.

Oh gods, not here. He looked around the dense forest. Of course, of all the times and places, it has to be now. In the middle of the hunters exam. In the middle of a forest. While I'm wearing white pants. Suddenly, Kurapika's short temper and crankiness over the last few hours made a lot of sense.

"Kurapika?" Leorio's voice sounded a bit annoyed. They'd been walking for most of the day, hunting down other applicants and trying to steal their numbered pins. "What's your deal? We took a water break like six minutes ago. We have to keep moving."

How do I tell him?! You know what, I can't. I won't. I'd rather die.

"Leorio. I need to use the bathroom." Kurapika said, eyes still glued to the ground.

"What did I just say, you used the bathroom like six minutes ago!"

"I have to go now!"

Leorio shushed him. "Dude, if you keep yelling, someone's gonna find us."

"Bold of you to say! You yelled first!" Kurapika whispered harshly.

"Kurapika, we have to keep moving. If someone finds us, we'll die."

"If I don't take care of this right now, then I will die." Kurapika was getting agitated. His limbs were starting to get sore.

Leorio scoffed. "Your bladder is not going to explode-"

"But my uterus is!" Kurapika blurted.

Leorio shook his head in disbelief. "Kurapika, you don't even have a uterus!"

"Yes I do, and it is bleeding." Kurapika said, his voice was desperate.

There was a beat of silence, then Leorio's scornful eyes blew wide in realization. "Oh my god."

Kurapika looked down in shame. "Yeah."

"Shit. Shit! Okay, here's what we're going to do." Leorio took Kurapika gently by the shoulders and steered him off the path. He stopped him in the middle of a group of trees, then fished around in his medical case. "I've only got pads, I hope that's okay. I've got three sizes, how heavy is your flow?"

Leorio held up three colored packages, refusing to look at Kurapika. The latter took one wordlessly, and Leorio stuffed the rest back into his case.

"I can hold your stuff while you get yourself sorted, but be quick." Leorio stood with his back towards the smaller man, and held out an arm. "I'm not going to look, but I'm not going to leave. It would be way too easy for someone to jump you right now."

Kurapika hastily took care of himself, opting not to take his pants all the way off due to the dirty forest floor. While he worked, Leorio silently watched the forest with a wary glare, demanding that anything that was hiding in the shadows should present itself.

As soon as Kurapika was done, he took his things back. Leorio nodded, then began rummaging in his case again. He pulled out pain meds, and a bag of food rations.

"Here. Take these, and something to eat. Let's get going, we don't want to stay in one place for too long."

Kurapika did as he was told, then followed closely behind Leorio as he lead the way back to their original path.

Kurapika munched quietly on his snack, watching his feet as he walked. "You won't... tell anyone, will you?"

Leorio blew a raspberry. "Are you kidding? No way. Never in a million years. It is not my secret to share." Then he glanced back. "You're not binding, are you?"

Kurapika shook his head. "I'm small enough that I feel comfortable without binding."

"Oh thank god. Imagine doing all this-" he gestured around at the forest, indicating the hunters exam. "- with a binder? You'd fucking die!" He dramatized choking to death, which brought a smile to Kurapika's face.

"The weird thing is, I've been on medication to slow and even stop my period, so I don't understand why I am starting now." He said thoughtfully.

"There are lots of things that can tip the balance when it comes to birth control." Leorio said, stepping over a particularly large tree root. "Things like hormones, diet, or even altitude." Leorio helped Kurapika over. "So you gotta make sure you try to stick to routines, and take your medication at the correct times. The side effects could be really bad."

"How do you..." Kurapika shook his head. "Never mind."

"No, tell me. What is it?" Leorio said playfully, throwing a glance over his shoulder as they continued.

"I was going to ask how you know so much. But it's rather obvious; you're an aspiring doctor, after all."

Leorio nodded, a proud smile slipping onto his face. "Yeah. This hunters exam has surely been out of routine, so it makes sense that your systems might be a bit jumbled." Leorio explained. Then an idea struck him. "Do you want me to carry you? I know your legs are the first to give out. You'll want to rest while your body is taking the first haul."

Kurapika laughed lazily. "The first haul. I've never heard of it described that way. And yes, as much as I hate to admit it, I would love to be carried right now."

Leorio handed him his briefcase, then crouched. Kurapika climbed onto his back, and Leorio held the underside of his thighs firmly.

"Keep a lookout, okay?" Leorio whispered. "We were caught up in chatting so we haven't been paying much attention. We need to be quiet from now on."

"Gotcha." Kurapika whispered back. He looked around, wary of the shadows and the wind rustling the leaves. He blinked once, then found his head resting on Leorio's shoulder. He sat up straight, opening his heavy eyelids and cracking his stiff jaw. "Did I pass out?"

"Only for a second or two. Don't worry." Leorio admitted.

"Sorry." Kurapika mumbled.

"It's okay. I'll find a place for us to stay the night, you just get some rest." Leorio offered.

Kurapika set his head down on Leorio's shoulder, and did all he could to keep hold of the briefcase as sleep overtook him once again. The way Leorio smelled... well he was stinky for sure, but also comforting. Human. Real. Warm.

"Kurapika, we're here." Leorio slowed to a stop and set the sleepy boy on his feet.

"Sorry again for making you carry me." Kurapika whispered. He felt terrible for not being able to go on his own. He was training to be a hunter, after all. He was supposed to be independent and much endurance or whatever.

"It's ok. I checked out this cave, and there's no funny business here. It's quite a hike, so I doubt anyone will find us."

"You were hiking with me on your back?" Kurapika put a hand on the older man's arm. "Leorio, you should have woken me."

"It's okay." Leorio reassured him. "You needed the rest. You still need it, so I'll take first watch."

"No, I can't make you stay up after carrying me all this way. It's my turn-"

"I'm serious! It's okay. I'd rather have you take a couple of hours to rest and recover than staying awake and keeping watch while you're still in pain."

It was true, Kurapika's cramps hadn't fully subsided yet, and he felt weak and sickly. But it still took him quite a bit of convincing before he agreed to let Leorio keep watch.

The night was cold, so the small man curled up close to his partner, using his satchel as a pillow and his tabard as a blanket.

"Thank you, Leorio." He whispered, tucking his knees up to his chest.

"You're welcome. Now sleep tight."
