Kurapika stirred the chemistry beaker, watching closely from behind his big safety goggles. Lienna watched him lazily, doodling on her worksheet.

"Are you going to help at all?" Kurapika huffed, picking up the next beaker.

"I hate chemistry. I'd rather study anatomy." Lienna winked with a smirk, earning a chorus of giggles from the girls seated next to her.

"You're gross." Kurapika sneered. Being annoyed was easier to stomach than being infatuated.

"C'mon, Peeks," Lienna stretched out and yawned. "It's funny."

"I don't think it's funny." Kurapika said quietly.

"Tch. Of course you don't."

A puff of purple smoke bloomed out of the beaker Kurapika had just been pouring into. He stared with wide eyes. Lienna sat up. Several people started to Ooh and aah, and Kurapika hastily put his things down in their proper place.

"Alright. My turn is over. You have a go at it." Kurapika sat down and scribbled furiously on his paper, avoiding everyone's gaze.

Lienna blinked and looked at the labels on the vials, then the instructions on the worksheet. "How the heck did you do that? These chemicals can't even do that!"

"Like you would know." Kurapika said accusingly, still not looking up.

Lienna looked at him for a second, then became aware of everyone staring and sat down to whisper harshly. "You're gay, aren't you?"

"Excuse me?" Kurapika hissed. "What does that have to do with anything?"

"Only gay people can do magic."

"That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard." Kurapika rolled his eyes.

"I'm serious! It's like, totally legitimate." Lienna was indeed very serious. "I won't tell anyone, I swear. I just... if you really can do magic, I need your help with something."

Kurapika hesitated. He really wanted to help Lienna. She was the only girl that had ever caught his attention. He needed her in order to convince himself that he wasn't gay, and the magic was all just tricks.

But helping Lienna would mean admitting that he can do magic. Even though she'd promised not to tell, people were hardly ever honest when it came to magic.

Lienna's eyes gave it all away: she was truly desperate for something. "Please?"

Kurapika took a deep breath. "Meet me by the big tree out in the soccer field after class."

She did. She was waiting out there before the bell even rang, watching the crowds of students, searching for Kurapika. He was trudging through the wet grass toward her, trying not to drown underneath the weight of his backpack.

"Do you need help carrying that?" Lienna offered when he approached.

"No, it's fine. What's all this about, then?"

Lienna wrung her hands nervously, throat suddenly tight with emotion. "Um, if you, Kurapika if you can do magic. I need your help making a potion. Or a spell, I don't know which one, sorry, I- I- oh god..." she wiped her face because tears covered her cheeks. "Sorry I- gah. It's really hard for me to say because I've never told anyone..."

Kurapika leaned away from her. "If it's a love potion, then the answer is no."

Lienna laughed, finally able to control her raging emotions. "No, no. Sorry. I need your help making a potion... that can turn me into a boy."

Kurapika blinked. "What?"

"I have never told anyone this, and you can't tell anyone either."

"A permanent sex deviation?" Kurapika shifted his hold on the backpack. "I dunno, Lienna. Spells like that are really advanced."

"Please, Kurapika you're the only person who can help me." Lienna grabbed Kurapika's arm, and the moment their skin made contact, he knew exactly how she was feeling. It was genuine. It was real. It was scary. Lienna believed that there was something deeply flawed within herself that she couldn't share with anyone. She had spent years keeping it to herself. Her inner self was desperate to be seen.

Kurapika sighed. "I know someone who can help."
