{Same AU as my fanfic 'everything's gonna be alright' it's very cute, and you should read it. Also available on AO3} Leorio POV
The sun is bright and reflects off the water as we rip across the lake on our small speed boat. Gon is clutching to an inflatable patty behind the boat, screaming with laughter every time he can get a breath. Water sprays him in the face relentlessly, but as per his request, I don't slow down.
Killua is sitting in the front of the boat, facing backward so he can tell me if Gon falls off. He has the orange flag we need to hoist in order to notify other boats that we have a passenger in the water.
Kurapika is sitting in the passenger seat, one hand holding his sun hat firmly against his head, and the other wrapped around little Alluka. Alluka is snuggled close against her dad, tired out from all the sun and fun.
Killua lifts the flag, and I immediately slow the boat. I make a wide turn, doing my best to sail over our wake, rather than slamming into it. I slowly approach Gon, then kill the engine as we sidle up to him. He's whooping and hollering like a crazy child.
"Okay buddy, Killua's turn for a while." I call to him.
"Okay!" He yells, then swims the last distance to the boat.
"Do you want to dip in, sweetheart? It's a hot day." I offer to Kurapika, holding my arms out for Alluka.
He nods and shakes Alluka a little. She rubs her eyes, then reaches out for me to take her. I scoop up the little girl in my arms, and she wraps her arms around my neck.
While Kurapika buckles his life jacket, I sit down next to the towel basket. I pull out the bottle of sunscreen, and begin to spray Alluka's legs. She flinches at how cold it is, so I rub it in with my warm hands. Legs, arms, shoulders, neck. Then I spray some on my hands so I can rub it onto her cheeks and nose. Her cute little face. Ah, I could just squish it!
I hear shouting, and look up to see Killua jumping in directly over Gon's head. Well, right next to him -Thank god. Everyone is happily playing, and safely buckled into their life jackets. I can breathe a little easier.
Once Alluka is done, she snuggles up again. I offer her a frozen uncrustable (god's gift to hot summer days), then get one for myself.
Soon the others join us on board, passing around the sandwiches and bottles of Gatorade.
My world slows down as I watch Kurapika climb the ladder and step onto the deck. His glistening skin and prominent muscles, usually hidden by a formal suit or traditional tabard, are proudly exposed to the sun. His hair is slicked down with lake water, but he quickly shakes it out with a whoosh.
Even after being married for nearly six years, I still get butterflies when I see him. My husband. My little firecracker. My sunshine.
"Papa," Killua swallows a bite of uncrustable. "You're doing it again."
"Hmm?" I turn my attention to him. "Doing what?"
"You're making goo-goo eyes." Gon teases.
"Psht, I'm not making goo-goo eyes."
"I agree with Gon." Kurapika sits down next to the boys, helping himself to a wrapped treat. "You were totally making goo-goo eyes."
"Okay, fine! Maybe I was. Is it so bad that I look at my husband with goo-goo eyes? There's a reason I married him, after all."
both boys groan their disapproval at my words of affection.
"Uh, anyway, it's my turn, right?" Killua asks to break the awkward silence.
Killua has a turn or two on the inflatable tube, and by the time he's done, everyone's feeling tuckered out. So we dock our boat, get it onto the trailer (incredible team work from me and Kurapika), and drive back to the hotel.
We take turns showering off the lake water, Kurapika and I sharing a turn- of course- to share some much needed romance. Once everyone is clean, dry, and in their pajamas, we all sit on the couch and apply aloe vera to our sunburns.
Killua had a nasty red line on the back of his neck, and the tops of his feet were cooked pink. Gon is a tanner, and his skin is already a darker shade than when we got here. We still made sure to rub his arms and shoulders with aloe. Kurapika's thighs were a stinging pink, and he had soft sun on his shoulders. Alluka didn't have much of a sunburn, but we wanted to include her in our post lake-day rituals.
I only got sun on my forearms. That's what I get for driving under the boat shade all day.
After a card game and some dessert, we settle down for the night. The boys got one bed, Alluka got the other, and Kurapika and I share the fold out couch. It isn't much, but with my husband in my arms, I might as well be on a king sized mattress with a down comforter.
With the lights off and the air conditioning humming softly, Kurapika rests his head on my chest. He kisses me, then simply looks at me for a moment.
I kiss him again, deeper this time. "I'm so in love with you."
"Good." He whispers. "I'm glad it's mutual."
We kiss for a while, trying to keep ourselves quiet as the minutes tick by.
