Kurapika tried his best not to run to the grocery store. His hips and legs still hurt unbearably, but the fear he felt was stronger. He burst through the doors and made a beeline for the hygiene section. He struggled to catch his breath for a moment, then remembered the lessons he learned from a good friend.

Total concentration breathing. That's it! Slow inhale, quick exhale. Again.

He walked down the aisle as casually as he could and found what he was looking for. He didn't want any weird looks, so he hid his products in a basket he'd snagged earlier. He put other things in the basket, like painkillers and chapstick.

He quickly went to the self check out, got his things paid for, then scurried off to get home. Thank god it was only a two-minute walk.

Kurapika scrambled through the front door of his shared townhouse, holding back tears. He was so scared. He was so anxious. He made it halfway to the bathroom before he collapsed against the wall, sobbing.

He didn't want it to be true. He wanted anything but the truth. He wasn't ready.

Leorio stepped out of his study into the hall. "Baby, what is it?"

Kurapika bit his lip to make it stop trembling. "I don't know. I- it's not even that big of a deal, but I'm scared."

Leorio crouched in front of him. "If it makes you scared, then obviously it's a pretty big fucking deal."

Kurapika handed him the bag without saying anything. Leorio looked inside for a second, then saw what was tormenting his boyfriend.

"This is..."

Kurapika just nodded, then burst into tears again.

"Shh, it's okay darling." Leorio hugged Kurapika, stroking his hair. "Do you want help? Or do you want to do this by yourself?"

"I want you in there with me." He admitted, voice shaking.

"Okay. Come on, let's get you up." Leorio helped him to his feet, then led him inside the bathroom. He set the grocery bag on the counter, then sat patiently on the edge of the tub. "You can go ahead, I'll be here the whole time."

Kurapika took a deep breath and nodded. Then he opened the bag and pulled out the source of his anxiety: a pregnancy test.

Even seeing it again made his throat tighten. Leorio held his hand reassuringly.

"How can I make you more comfortable, darling? Do you want me to turn around so I won't see? Should I hold your hand or are you okay right now?" Leorio handed him a cup from inside the shower. "I want you to be in complete control right now, so tell me what to do."

Kurapika put his hand on Leorio's head and just gazed lovingly at him for a moment. Then he pulled him into a hug and kissed the top of his hair. "You're so good to me, Leorio."

Leorio hugged him close, but not tight. "Thank you. Now, let's get this over with so we can see the results."

Kurapika directed Leorio to turn around and close his eyes. Peeing into a cup in front of one's boyfriend is embarrassing, regardless of whether or not you've seen each other naked before.

After he finished his business and cleaned himself up, he told Leorio it was alright to turn around. Kurapika's hands were shaking so badly that Leorio ended up unboxing the pregnancy test for him. Kurapika dipped the testing tip into the cup, and together they counted to twenty.

Kurapika took it out and set it on the counter, then disposed of the nasty cup. Then he sat on Leorio's lap, and they waited for the bars to change.

"Do you want it to be positive or negative?" Leorio asked, looking down at him.

"I'm not sure," Kurapika admitted. "I want a child, deep down I know I want to restore my clan... but I'm scared. What if I'm not ready? What if the kids at school bully our kid for having two dads? What if the hospital nurses refuse to work with a transman? If we get turned away at the hospital, I don't know where to go, or what to do. I've never done this before and I'm scared. What if my body isn't ready, or something goes wrong?"

"I promise you, no one will turn us down. Transgender or not, you're still pregnant. It would be inhumane to turn you down." Leorio rubbed his arm. "And I think you're forgetting a very important detail Kurapika."

The smaller man looked up at him.

"I'm going to be here for you every step of the way. This is going to be our baby, our responsibility. You don't have to do this alone."

Kurapika smiled and set his head against Leorio's chest. "Thank you, sweetheart. It means the world to me."

Leorio checked his watch. "It's been five minutes. Do you want to check?"

Kurapika took a deep breath. "Yeah. I don't want to see it until you do."

Leorio nodded. "Here, I've got an idea." He stood up, setting Kruapika on his feet. Then he reached over to the counter without looking. He took the test and covered it with his hand. "Come here. Hold it with me."

Kurapika put his hands over Leorio's, and they situated so they were both holding it.

"Look on the count of three, okay? Remember, two lines mean it's positive, one line is negative."

"One. Two... Three." Kurapika counted them down, then they both looked down at the test in their hands.

The pregnancy test was a tube-like instrument, shaped a little bit like a popsicle stick. The sleek white plastic was interrupted by a little display box in the middle. The display box proudly presented two lines.

Positive.

"Kurapika," Leorio whispered in awe. "Kurapika, we're gonna be dads."

The blond man was stunned silent. He just stared at the two red lines. Positive. A baby. Our very own baby.

"We're going to be dads," Kurapika muttered, then looked into Leorio's eyes. "We are going to be dads!"

They were both smiling and overwhelmed with tears. For a while, the two men held each other in a comforting embrace. Their lives were about to change in a very drastic way. There were a lot of hard days ahead of them, but they were ready.
