Happy Birthday

Kurapika had received many gifts from his friends on his birthday. Gon gave him a book lamp. Not a lamp you clip onto a book, but a lamp shaped like a book that lights up when you open it. Killua gave him a chameleon colored butterfly knife, explaining that it was not only useful in combat but also seemed to change colors as it was wielded.

Alluka, although she hardly knew Kurapika, drew him a lovely picture of them holding hands under a rainbow, with the title "friends" written across the bottom. Kurapika kept it tucked in his breast pocket at all times.

But Leorio's gift was especially nice. He had arranged for a very special dinner, hosted by Hanzo- one of the friends they had made during the Hunter exam. Leorio and Kurapika sat at the table while Hanzo prepared and served their food. Sushi. And not just the fish on rice, but rolls of various kinds.

Hanzo seemed thrilled to be teaching someone about his culture and favorite food. He told them stories about his people's other traditions, and about his life as a shinobi.

Even though Leorio had offered to pay hanzo for his time, hanzo politely declined.

"Consider it my birthday present for mister Kurapika." He bowed respectfully when confronted about it.

After he left, Kurapika sat on the couch while Leorio finished cleaning because "the birthday boy shouldn't do any work on his special day," as Leorio had said.

But the dinner was only the first part of Leorio's gift. He had done some research, taken some lessons, studied up, and prepared the most thoughtful gift he could.

"Go on, open it." Leorio sat across the couch from him, crossing his legs excitedly.

Kurapika carefully tore the paper away to reveal a set of robes. A long skirt and over shirt, made in the style of the Kurta clan.

"I've been researching the Kurta clan, and although not much is written about the scarlet eyes or specialist abilities; there was plenty to learn about traditions and culture."

Kurapika held up the over shirt, amazed at the patterning and detail. "Where did you find these?"

"I made them." Leorio smiled. And don't worry, they'll fit you perfectly. And it's a little shorter in the back, I know that's how you like it. I reinforced the shape of the skirt so it won't cling to your pants, and used a special non-static material." He brushed his fingers over the red fabric. "Do... do you like it?"

"Like it?" Kurapika set it down reverently. "Leorio I love it. I couldn't have asked for a better birthday gift."
