17. ENGLISH

It was night and Varian was awake.  He couldn't sleep as he now does every night.  He was thinking of a person, a very important person to him.  That person had raven hair, big green eyes, she liked to fight and wanted to be a royal guard.  That person was Cassandra.

  Varian really liked her so much, he was in love with her and every day he kept thinking about her and hoping she would notice him.  In short, he was deeply in love with her and even Varian's dreams were intoxicated by her.

  But she saw him as a kid, or at least that was what Varian thought and what he understood from the signals Cassandra sent him.

  She had returned from her trip a little over a month ago in Corona and Varian when he heard the news he was the most enthusiastic of all, even more than Rapunzel, princess and best friend of Cassandra.

  For her return, Varian had brought her a bouquet of red, coral, and white roses.  Each was going to indicate how much Varian wanted her.
  Cassandra when she received them, she thanked Varian with a smile and called him a kid, even though he had grown up.

  The boy, in fact, was no longer 14 years old like when he fell in love with Cassandra, but he was 20. He had grown up, but his love for that woman had not vanished.  In fact, the more time passed, the more Varian fell in love with her.

  "Ah, Ruddiger, why does falling in love hurt?"  Varian told his trusted raccoon.

  The raccoon made a face, as if to say "man, I don't know".  Varian picked him up and fell asleep with him beside him.

  The next morning Varian had left early to go to the castle, which had been his job for some years now.  In fact, he was the most trusted royal engineer.  Thanks to him, Corona was the first of the seven kingdoms to have running hot water.

  Rapunzel had been awake for a while, while her husband Eugene was still asleep.  He got up and went to check if her best friend Cassandra was awake, since she came back to stay, she always woke up early.  The princess suddenly bumped into a person.

  "Hey, princesses, good morning," Varian said after rubbing his aching head.

  "Good morning to you, Varian. How come so early here?"  the girl asked curiously, after hugging Varian.

  "I honestly don't know" she scratched her head uncomfortably "what about you?"

  "I don't know either, I woke up very early, but hey, you know I'm used to doing a lot of things before seven fifteen."

  They both laughed and Rapunzel looked worriedly at Varian.  The boy looked thoughtful, so the young woman asked "Hey, Varian, are you okay?"

  "Me? No, I mean yes, but no," Varian stammered.

  "What's going on? Come on tell me, you know you can trust me"

  "The fact is..." Varian sighed "I like someone, but that someone will never return my feelings.."

  "Let me guess.. Is it Cassandra?"

  "Yes, princess, it's her. Look.. I'm really in love with her"

  "I had no doubts.. And did you talk about it with her?"

  "No. I already know that she will reject me or she will laugh at me thinking it is a joke"

  "But if you don't talk to her you'll never know. Listen to me Varian, I love you both and I know how much you like Cassandra, so... go and talk to her. She's awake by now."

  "But I-"

  "Nothing but kid, go and confide in her. You'll make it," Rapunzel said with a wink.

  Varian, following Rapunzel's advice, made his way to Cassandra's room.  He was not ready to come out and was very afraid, but he thought that now was the moment.

  He came to the door of Cassandra's room and after a sigh, knocked on the door.  He heard a "come on" and went inside.

  "Oh hi Varian, why come here? And why so soon?"  Cassandra asked.

  "I... I should talk to you about something very important"

  "Oh sure, Varian, tell me," Cassandra said in surprise.

  Okay, it's time, Varian thought.

  "Cassandra I would like to tell you.. sorry for what I did when I was not me. I did not want to hurt you absolutely, I'm sorry"

  He had wanted to apologize to Cassandra for too long, but in that moment, seeing the girl he was in love with, he could not say more.

  "Varian, the only one who has to apologize here is me. I'm sorry for everything I've done to the kingdom, which I've done especially to you. Plus I didn't believe you when you told me I'd lose everything and that the way  hate was a really bad idea. Sorry for everything. "

  A tear fell from Cassandra's eye.  Varian wiped it with her thumb and apologized immediately afterwards.  As soon as he started to leave, Cassandra took him by the arm.

  This reminded Varian when he was the one who took her by the arm, convincing her not to be her bad guy.

  "Where do you think you're going kid? I know you haven't told me everything"

  Varian slowly turned to her and said "yes, you're right".

  "Listen to me, what I'm about to say could change my life, for better or for worse" he sighed "anyway Cassie, promise me you'll never leave"

  "I promise you, Varian," Cassandra said smiling at Varian.

  "Cass, I.. I feel something for you. And it's not just a crush, because if it was, it would have passed me by, but I'm in love with you. I know that.. most likely you see me as a kid .."

  "Varian.."

  "As the kid of yore means.."

  "Varian.."

  "That same kid who gave you the Cassandrium and maybe you threw away.."

  "Varian.."

  "Yes, Cassie wha-"

  Cassandra took him by the collar of his shirt and kissed him.  Varian to her surprise kept his eyes open, but then closed them, enjoying the kiss and returning it.  It was a chaste, pure, innocent, but longing kiss, with love, just like the roses Varian brought to Cassandra the day she came.

  "For me you are not just a kid, Varian" Cassandra said as soon as they broke away from the kiss "And to be precise.. I still have the Cassandrium, I always keep it with me, see?"  Cassandra showed the necklace she had around her neck, under her clothes.

"I can't believe you still keep the Cassandrium"

"It's very important to me that necklace. A special person to me gave me it"

  "Cassie.. I love you"

  "I love you too Var".
