"We've picked up the same scent on our land a couple of times" said Jacob's friend Embry as he exited my house. "It won't be hard to miss next time we come across it" he said as he looked at my mom, Carlos, Edward and I. "Whoever it was must've cut across your lands which is why we were unable to follow the scent anymore" said Carlos and Embry nodded.
"We've upped our nightly patrols to keep an eye out. Two of our pack members will swap shifts with the Cullen's in guarding the outside of your home for the time being" Embry explained and I nodded. "Thank you" said Edward as he stood beside me. "Yes, thank you for all of your help Embry. I appreciate it" said my mom. "No problem" said Embry before he turned and jogged into the woods.
As the days passed, things became more tense. The wolves would swap shifts with the Cullen's in guarding Bella and I's houses so that the Cullen's could hunt. Though it went against their natural instinct, things were civil. Throughout the day at school, I was never alone. Edward would walk me to class and when he couldn't Alice and Jasper would.
Edward would pick me up and drop me off every day and wherever I went in the house, my mom and Carlos were never far away. I had never seen my mom so on edge in my life. Every night she would sit outside my room to listen out for anything whilst Carlos would remain downstairs keeping an eye on every entry into the house.
But as hard as they tried, Edward, Carlos and my mom couldn't put their hunger for blood to the side forever and today was one of those days. "Mom, I'll be fine here ok?" I said as I stood at the Cullen's door, Esme standing beside me with a warm smile on her face. "Angelica, I promise I will keep her safe" said Esme as she placed a gentle hand on my shoulder.
My mom nodded before hugging me. "We won't be long mi amore" she replied as she pulled away and I nodded. My mom and Carlos disappeared into the woods and I turned to Edward. "I'll be in the house" said Esme before she walked away. "I shouldn't be too long" said Edward as he looked at me. "Don't rush for me Edward. You need to hunt ok?" I said and he smirked.
"Yes ma'am" he replied and I giggled. Edward turned and made his way to the woods. "Edward!" I called and he turned to look at me. I ran down the steps and stopped in front of him. I leaned up and pressed my lips against his and he immediately kissed my back as he gripped me to him. This was the first time I had laid my lips against his since Volterra and I had never missed something so much.
We pulled away and Edward rested his forehead against mine. "Does this mean I am forgiven?" he asked and I giggled as I nodded. "You've been punished long enough" I said and he chuckled. I stepped away from him and he walked into the woods, disappearing from my sight. I turned on my heal unable to hide the smile on my face and walked into the house.
I closed the front door behind me and made my way upstairs to the kitchen where I saw Esme flicking through a magazine. "Someones happy" said Esme as she looked up at me and I covered my face with my hands as I blushed hard. "Awww! Did you and Edward finally make up?" she asked and I nodded as I looked up at her.
She gave a gasp before suddenly appearing beside me as she wrapped me in a tight hug. "Oh Serena I'm so happy for the two of you!" said Esme as she pulled away and I smiled. "Thank you Esme" I replied. "I'm so happy! My sons finally happy once more" she said as she sat on the stool beside me causing me to giggle.
"So, you and Carlisle see all of them as your kids? It's not just for show?" I asked and Esme shrugged before giving a nod. "Yes we do. As vampires, we can't have children of our own. Alice, Jasper, Emmett and Rosalie are the closest thing to me having my own children" said Esme and I nodded. "Carlisle in particular is very fatherly over all of them. Especially Edward" said Esme.
"Is that because he changed Edward first?" I asked and Esme nodded. "Yes. They spent a lot of time together wandering the streets. See all of the kids don't really see Carlisle and I as parental figures so much because they had parents of their own but they have the same respect for us as they would their parents. They don't call us mom and dad. To them, we're just Esme and Carlisle but to me, all of them are so much more" Esme said with a warm smile.
"That's so sweet. So you wanted kids of your own when you were human?" I asked and Esme's smile dwindled slightly. "Umm, I had a daughter but unfortunately she passed away as a baby" said Esme and I gave a small gasp. "Oh Esme! I'm so sorry!" I said and she shook her head slightly. "It's alright. She's in a better place. I know she's always with me" said Esme and I nodded.
"My mom always told my sister and I, when someone dies, they turn into stars to watch over their loved ones while they sleep at night to protect them. She said souls are like stars, you don't see them, but you know they're always there" I said and Esme smiled. "That's very true" she said in agreement. "If you don't mind me asking, what was your daughters name?" I asked.
"Her name was Edith. After my grandmother. Edith Lucia Evenson" said Esme. "What a beautiful name" I replied. "Sometimes I wonder, what she would've been like when she grew up. How she would've looked. What her hobbies would've been. All the what ifs. I don't think about her as often as I used to. And overtime the pain...grew to be less painful. I suppose after so long you become numb. And being around my family has really helped. They reminded me what happiness was and helped me love again. I'll be forever grateful to all of them for that" said Esme and I smiled as my eyes teared up.
"You have such a beautiful soul Esme. In a way you're too good for this world and although I wish I could go back in time and give you all of those what ifs with you daughter, I'm so glad I got to meet you in this lifetime" I said as I wiped a fallen tear. Esme gave me a big warm smile before leaning over and embracing me once more.
