CHANGES | ACT LXIII

INT. FANCY RESTAURANT — MID AFTERNOON

KOYAMA and MICHIKO sat across from each other, at a table for two, on the second floor balcony of the restaurant. KOYAMA felt a bit anxious with the overview of the restaurant and her back turned to the staircase, but she tried to remain calm on the exterior, just to keep face.

CEO MICHIKO
I apologize for reaching
out suddenly, I know I've
been recently, fairly apologetic,
but I don't really know what
more to say.

CEO MICHIKO
When I had you and Kenji,
I was a 23 year old with
ambition. I did think of
the fact that you two would
grow under the public eye, and
saw it best to keep you two away
from it, but I was also selfish
with my decision.

CEO MICHIKO
I didn't want to be hindered.
I didn't want to fall back
after all I'd built for
myself.

KOYAMA
And why are you
telling me this now?

KOYAMA
The food I'm digesting
might not digest at all.

CEO MICHIKO
That time, when you
modeled for my brand,
I know you didn't accept
out of the kindness of
your heart.

CEO MICHIKO
You knew I was the one
who arranged the call.

CEO MICHIKO
How else would you have
been contacted?

CEO MICHIKO
I thought it over, our
initial impressions of
each other, and decided to
reach out again, because I-
we— need the closure.

KOYAMA
This is all about
you though, isn't it?

KOYAMA
You want to gain something
out of giving me the
answers I want from you.

CEO MICHIKO
That could be the case,
or it could just be that
I want to help you.

CEO MICHIKO
You're a great designer.
You've got a lot of potential.

KOYAMA
Pfft what? Me?
A designer? Who
told you that? Pfft.

CEO MICHIKO
(Coughs).
Here, you left this
the day of the photo
shoot.

KOYAMA
(Shocked).
So, that's
where it was.

KOYAMA
(Laughs).
It's just art.

CEO MICHIKO
Of course it's art,
but there's more to it,
and you know that.

CEO MICHIKO
Here, I can't keep this.
You're lucky I was the
one who found it, I trust
my staff, but there could
be someone astute enough
to steal your work if
you're not careful.

KOYAMA
Thank you, but...

KOYAMA
(Sighs).
I've made up my
mind, I can't just
drop everything I've
done the past few
months.

CEO MICHIKO
You're taking a bachelor
in Biological Sciences?
Correct?

KOYAMA
(Hesitant)
Yes...how do you
know all this?

CEO MICHIKO
(Shrugs).
You're at a perfect time
to switch majors. I'll cover
the expenses. Next fall, you'll
become an intern in my company,
and you'll finally be doing
something you love.

KOYAMA
(Defensive)
But I love what I'm
doing now. What if I
don't want your help?
Do you think that money
will compensate the shame
I've been put through when
you left Kenji and I under
the care of someone who
obviously hated us?

KOYAMA
(Angry)
I don't want your help.
I don't want this stupid
offer if you think it'll
help you win me over!

KOYAMA
(Tearing up)
Doing something I love...
yeah I loved it so much
that I was forced to act
like someone I wasn't.

KOYAMA
(Angry)
I just wanted to...not be
like you...so that my
mother would love me.

KOYAMA
(Grabs her things
and stands up).
I don't want you to bring
this up ever again.
I've also made a selfish
decision. I don't want to
be hindered. I've worked too
hard to foster something that's
still walking on thin ice for
it to suddenly fall apart
because of you.

KOYAMA
Thanks, for the
lovely dinner.
(Smiles).

MICHIKO watched her daughter walk away with a look of astonishment on her face. MICHIKO flinched out of her seat when KOYAMA missed a step, but the brunette caught onto the railing, and saved herself. KOYAMA glared back at her, and her cheeks turned bright red.

MICHIKO waved her hand as if to say "go, keep walking", and KOYAMA sneered at this.

CEO MICHIKO
I tried Hibiki, but,
it seems I've met my
temperamental rival.
