Ivy and Miguel met Johnny for training the next afternoon as promised. It turned out to be at the local park where Ivy and Robby would eat ice cream and take walks on their down time. She tried to push that thought to the back of her mind as she fell into place. Besides her and Miguel, Mitch, Bert and a few other rejected cobras had shown up. It was barely a handful, but it was a start.
Johnny was standing front of them in jeans, a tee shirt and a bright red jacket, his karate band tied around his forehead. He paced a little as if in thought, and then turned back to face the kids before him.
"Alright, this is day one!" he said loudly, and Ivy felt another speech coming on, "We've been here before, but things are different now. They tried to tear us down, DIDN'T WORK! Said we needed a roof and four walls, SCREW THAT! This park will be our new Dojo! Cause you don't need a Dojo to be a Dojo. Is that understood?"
"Yes, Sensei!" the group howled back, though some of them were still unsure.
"I started Cobra Kai with one nerd, this is a step up!" Johnny continued as he looked them over, "And if we're going to be taken seriously, we need a name than commands respect. A name that elicits power and dominance. Cobras are strong, they may be the king of the jungle, but the world is more than just a jungle. And there's only one animal that can kill a snake."
"A mongoose?" Bert took a guess skeptically.
"A real animal, Bert." Johnny scoffed.
He paused to shuffle through a box for something and Ivy held her breath, knowing that Johnny had about a 50/50 shot between genius and stupidity. He grabbed something balled up, and then stood to face them again.
"Welcome to Eagle Fang Karate!" Johnny announced, revealing a tee shirt with their new logo on it.
The shirt was cherry red with a bald eagle head on it, dead center. The eagle had its beak stretched open menacingly to reveal two sets of fangs, and underneath it in bold white and red letters was their new Dojo name.
"Holy shit..." Ivy mumbled, not knowing how to feel.
"Uh, eagles don't have fangs." Mitch pointed out, only to get socked in the face by the new tee shirt as Johnny threw it.
Mitch moved to pick up the shirt as Johnny handed the rest of the kids their own shirts. They unfolded them and looked them over, some impressed, some hesitant.
"Put them on!" Johnny ordered, and they obeyed.
"Anyone else's feel a little...snug?" Mitch asked the others, and they looked to see that his shirt barely covered his stomach.
"Do some more sit-ups." Johnny brushed him off, "Alright, everybody fall in!"
They moved into position, ready to start the session, but movement caught Ivy's eye and she and Miguel looked to see a group of kids approaching them.
"Sensei, look." Miguel motioned to Johnny, who turned as well.
It was Hawk with two other cobras, and Johnny let out a laugh as he smiled at Miguel.
"Still got it." He winked and turned to the rest of them, "Alright everyone, looks like our class just got a little bigger. Make room!"
Johnny turned again to face the cobras as they approached, and Ivy watched Hawk carefully. He looked innocent enough, but something in his eyes spooked her, and she had a feeling that this was not the day that Eli would be returning.
