PART TWO/SEASON TWO
On the way home, Ivy leaned her head up against the window as she reflected on the tournament. She had gotten what she wanted. Miguel was champion and Cobra Kai was back on top, but the more her grandma drove the more she felt her happiness dissipate. The stunts that Robby had pulled today weighed heavily on her, especially when he tried to get her back. Her anger had kept her resolve firm when he had confronted her, but now that she was away from him a pang of loneliness and longing bit at her heart. Would it really be so bad to go back to him? Did she have it in her to give it one more try?
"You know, you reminded me a lot of your dad today." Her grandma said suddenly, pulling her from her thoughts.
"Yeah?" Ivy asked, turning her head forward to face her.
"Mhm." She saw her grandma smile kindly in the rear-view mirror, "Your dad was on the wrestling team back in high school, a natural if I ever saw one."
"Oh, he never told me that." Ivy mumbled.
"I'm surprised." Her grandpa chimed in, "That was his whole life back then. I've never seen such dedication and focus from someone."
"Really?" Ivy smiled.
"You'd better believe it!" her grandma smiled proudly, "I have an album somewhere full of pictures from the matches. I'll have to find it for you."
"That'd be cool." Ivy nodded.
"You had that same look in your eye during the tournament that he had when wrestling. Up until that last moment." Her grandpa looked back at her, "What happened, sweet pea?"
"Oh...that." Ivy sighed.
She took a moment to collect her thoughts, deciding that there was no point in hiding it anymore. Lecture or not, she felt like they needed to know.
"So...you know that kid who made it to the finals, Robby Keene?"
"The injured one, not your friend?" her grandma asked to clarify.
"Yeah, him..." Ivy mumbled, "Well...he was my boyfriend. He broke up with me last night. He wasn't supposed to be at the tournament, it threw me off."
"Well then I'm glad he got injured." Her grandpa nodded angerly.
"Charles!" her grandma chastised him.
"What? Kid's gotta be half retarded at least if he broke up with Ivy!" her grandpa spat, "That little bastard..."
"No, grandpa, it was my fault. I lied to him." Ivy admitted.
"About what?" her grandma asked.
"Sensei Lawrence, my karate instructor, is his dad. I didn't know until we were already dating, but I didn't tell him when I found out. Robby hates his dad, and I didn't want to choose between him and karate, so I didn't say anything." Ivy looked away as she explained, "He found out eventually and we tried to work through it, but he couldn't handle the fact that I was on good terms with his dad, and he wasn't. So, he left."
"Did you two...you know?" her grandma asked.
"What? Oh! No, no, we weren't that serious!" Ivy blushed.
"I had to ask. Sex changes a relationship." Her grandma said gently.
"Consider it a blessing, sweet pea. He wasn't strong enough to handle you." Her grandpa tried to comfort her, "Now that Eli kid, he's got some fire! I really thought there was something going on between you two."
"Oh my god, grandpa!" Ivy rolled her eyes with a groan, "That's what everyone keeps saying!"
"Maybe because they can see something you can't." her grandma gave her a teasing smile.
