Ivy met Miguel at his apartment early the next morning. They waited outside with small talk and back packs bursting with supplies while his mom finished getting ready. She was a nurse and would be going to work right after she dropped them off, meaning Ivy would have to ride the bus home with Miguel. She was a little nervous but mostly excited. It was time for her new normal.
When Mrs. Diaz was ready, they piled into the car and drove off. She tried to keep a conversation going with the teens, but they were too tired to give more than one-word answers. Eventually she gave up, and they reached the school not long after that. Ivy got out first as Miguel lingered to say goodbye. Once Mrs. Diaz was gone, he turned to Ivy.
"You ready for this?"
"Let's do it." Ivy smiled.
Pushing through kids, they made their way inside the school and to the office to get their schedules. After waiting in line for longer than she would have liked, they were able to get their schedules from the secretary, and they moved back out into the hall to compare their sheets.
"Hm. Doesn't look like we have any classes together." Miguel mumbled, looking back and forth between the papers.
"Really?" Ivy frowned, double checking with him.
"Nope, none." He shook his head.
"That sucks." She whined.
"Well, we do have lunch together. That's something." He shrugged.
"I guess." Ivy breathed, disappointed, "Well, I guess I'll see you then. Good luck, loser."
"You're a loser." Miguel smiled.
Ivy leaned forward to hug him and he squeezed back. They parted ways then, and Ivy took a deep breath to prepare herself. She could do this. She wanted to have a good time for once. She was sick of being mopey, and she promised her grandma that she would do well.
Her first class was biology, a subject she actually enjoyed. Thankfully, she wasn't forced to introduce herself, no one seemed to care, so she was able to lose herself in her class work. Next was English, a class she also excelled in. Unfortunately though, the teacher was monotone and boring, so that class seemed to drone on and on and on, and Ivy had to fight the urge to sleep. After that was math, the one class Ivy loathed. She remembered hearing once that people were either good at English or good at math, never both, and this seemed to be the case for her. She took good notes and tried so hard to pay attention, but by the time class ended, her head was ready to explode.
Finally, it was time for lunch, and she raced down the hall to find Miguel. She found him coming out of the computer lab, and she ran over to playfully nudge him.
"Hey, loser."
"Hey yourself." Miguel smiled and nudged her back.
"What a morning, huh?" she asked as they fell into step and made their way to the cafeteria.
"It was something alright." Miguel agreed, "Anything eventful?"
"Nah, just getting used to this school. It's huge." She shook her head.
"Yeah, tell me about it. I got lost four or five times." He let out a chuckle.
"I'm not surprised." She laughed.
Miguel gave her a look as they reached the cafeteria. It was already packed full of kids, and most of the tables were full. Ivy let out a grumble as they got in line to get their food. When that was done, they turned back to the crowd to search.
