Johnny had actually prepared and elaborate meal, which surprised Ivy. He had also invited Mami, Yaya and Miguel, so the dinning area was full. They sat at Johnny's small table while Ivy and Eli shared a T.V. tray near them. A pleasant smell wafted through the house, and Ivy's stomach growled in anticipation.
"Dinner is served!" Johnny announced proudly and carried the last dish to the table, "Alright, tonight's main course is Fajitas and grilled vegetables. I have Pico de Gayo, and corn and flour tortillas."
"Wow!" Mami fawned over his efforts as Miguel made Eli and Ivy plates, handing them back to them, "This looks delicious, Johnny!"
"Thanks, I got the recipe off the Chili's website." Johnny explained as he sat down and opened a beer, "I wanted it to be authentic."
Yaya said something in Spanish with a laugh as everyone began to grab food and eat, and Mami laughed what sounded like a warning back at her. Ivy took a huge bite with Eli, and they nodded to each other in approval of the flavor. It was better than anything that Johnny had made before, and Ivy couldn't help but savor it. It seemed like dinner at Johnny's wasn't going to be such a challenge after all.
"Here, try this. Spicy mango." Johnny said and held up a jar for Yaya, "Just like the old country."
Ivy held back a chuckle as she watched Johnny dump a heap of salsa onto Yaya's plate. Yaya put up a hand to stop him and mumbled something in Spanish that sounded polite but annoyed.
"This is so good!" Eli groaned, taking another big bite of his fajita.
"Mhm. Well done, Sensei, for once." Ivy smirked at him.
"Hey, shut up back there." Johnny chastised her through a grin.
"So how was the big first day?" Mami asked as she grabbed more toppings.
"Uh, you know, it's the first day." Johnny sighed as he assembled his fajita, "It's a work in progress."
Miguel mirrored his sigh as he grabbed some sour cream, and Ivy and Eli shared a look. Calling their first day a work in progress was an understatement. It was an absolute disaster, and certainly didn't encourage any unity between the Dojo's.
"I'm happy you and Daniel are working together." Mami went on, "I just want to make sure Migi's safe."
"I said that my back's in better shape than ever, okay?" Miguel let out a laugh, but Ivy could hear the annoyance in his voice, "You don't have to worry."
"She's your mom, she's always going to worry." Johnny said before turning to Mami, "Don't worry, I'm watching him."
Johnny and Mami shared a smile, and Yaya set her fork down to clasp her hands together. She turned to Miguel and started speaking in Spanish again, her gestures suggesting that she was taunting him, and for a second, Ivy considered learning Spanish so she could be in on the jokes.
"I'm glad you and Sam are back together." Mami clarified with a smile, "She's cute."
"Oh, so cute!" Ivy joined in on the teasing.
"Such an adorable couple!" Eli agreed through a full mouth.
"Hey! Watch it! You don't want me to get started on you two!" Miguel smirked a warning over his shoulder.
"Why, whatever could he mean?" Ivy looked to Eli innocently.
"Haven't the faintest idea, gorgeous!" Eli answered pompously.
