After 20 minutes Catherine came back alone.
"Hi." She smiles. "Everything okay?"
"Yes." Jessica smiles. "She's perfect."
"She sure is. She's probably hungry too."
"No, I don't think she is." Jessica says not looking up to Catherine.
"How do you know?"
"I just do."
"Jessica.. did you feed her?"
"Yeah.. so?"
"Honey." Catherine sighs.
"She was hungry!"
"Jessica, this is going to make it harder on the both of you."
"I wanted to nurse her at least once. I won't do it again.."
"Okay.. it's okay."
"Now I'm just waiting for her diaper to start smelling so I can change it."
Catherine laughs. "Babies don't usually have smelly diapers until later."
"Oh. Well do you think I can change her now?"
"Maybe wait until she starts fussing."
"Okay.. She seems like such a good baby."
"She does." Catherine smiles.
"Mrs. Paulson, she looks nothing like that man."
"No, she looks just like her mama."
Jessica smiles and kisses the baby's nose.
"Um.. Gary and Jennifer wanted to know if they could see her before leaving for the night."
Jessica sighs. "Why can't they just leave me alone? They'll have her for the rest of their lives. I only get two days."
"I can send them away if that's what you want. If you'd rather them stay away until you have to hand her over, then I will tell them."
"No.. I-" Jessica sighs. "No it's fine. But tell them it'll be a short visit."
"Okay, I will."
"Thank you."
**
Gary and Jennifer walked in with Catherine leading the way. She didn't want them saying anything to upset Jessica.
"There's our girl." Jennifer smiles.
Jessica looks over and Jennifer takes the baby.
Jessica sighs and messes with the sheet covering her. Jessica was a nervous wreck watching them hold her daughter.
The baby then begins to fuss.
A look of worry spread across Jessica's face.
The newborn arched her back and screamed loudly.
"She is a fussy little baby!" Gary says.
"Actually she's not. She's been great the whole time we were alone."
"She's just tired. Rest those pretty little eyes, honey." Jennifer says.
"I think this might be too much for her. Why don't you just give her back to me and I'll calm her down."
"She has to learn to live without you, honey." Jennifer said.
The baby cries louder.
"Give her to me!"
