Room 3004, Faculty of Music, Juilliard School.
Rona, Steph, Yoo Jung and Ryo entered the classroom, and found some seats in the middle row. About 5 minutes later, Clark walked in.
Good morning students! Welcome to your first day of school! As most of you know I will be the overall Prof in charge of the Vocal major. I will also be your Prof for this unit - Introduction to Vocal Performance. Today I have invited all your Professors to join us, so please put your hands together to welcome your Professors and tutors.
Right then walked in the various professors, the class clapped and welcomed them.
There is a slight surprise as well, I will not be introducing them to you because you all will get the chance to meet them when you go for your respective modules. However what will happen today is that all of you will be singing in front of us all.
The classroom suddenly became really noisy.
Ha, if you were paying attention. I did mention that at the start of every semester there will be an evaluation. Since you are all new students this is not really counted as an evaluation but rather for us teachers to get to know not only you but your voice better. At Juilliard, you will be getting individual tailored lessons and in order to facilitate that - well we need to hear you sing! So who wishes to go first?
The classroom was completely silent, Clark had anticipated such a response so he had already prepared a raffle, which would choose people at random. Slowly the first evaluation began, students were allowed to choose any song of their choosing. Midway into the raffle, it was Yoo Jung's turn. She nervously wiped her hands on her jeans and stood up to move to the front of the classroom. She spoke to the accompanying pianist about her choice of song.
After getting the signal from Clark that she can begin anytime, Yoo Jung paused for just a few seconds, then the pianist receiving her signal started to play. Yoo Jung was a talented singer, her voice was light and crisp. It was clear that her technique was a little shaky when she went low or high but overall her transitions were beautiful. She received wonderful praises from the teachers. Following Yoo Jung was Ryo. He was one of the few males in the Voice major so the competition in terms of males was not as intense compared to the females.
He cleared his throat and started singing. His arrangement was really intriguing, instead of waiting for the pianist to begin he had actually first started acapella for a few bars before the pianist came in. Rona was completely captivated by Ryo's voice, normally he was often quiet but when he sang, it was almost as though he completely transformed.
Doesn't it seem like he is almost a completely different person? Steph whispered to Rona, and Rona nodded softly to agree. With Ryo finished, he was the last of the male students. Rona personally thought that he probably had the best voice and technique out of them all. It was rather fascinating to see Ryo transform back to his quiet self once he finished singing. He just bowed slightly before silently taking his seat. When he saw Yoo Jung and Rona give him a thumbs up, he just let out a small smile in thanks.
It was Rona and Steph last, Steph was called next. Out of the 4, Stephaine probably had the longest experience singing, she had started her training at a very young age and was familiar with competition. Steph confidently walked up and just quieted her energy before singing. Stephaine was just as good as Rona remembered, her voice had strength and yet softness that suited almost every style of song. Her stance and body just radiated confidence, after she had finished, the professors couldn't help but give her a round of applause.
Lastly, it was Rona. Rona was nervous but she was used to this kind of setting as Chungah often had such evaluations. Stephaine knew that unlike her who had specialised training for a young age, Rona only really started training around middle school. Rona had inherited her mother's gift of music and because she worked hard, she managed to climb up not just at Chungah but even when she was in the States.
Not long after, Rona's beautiful voice filled the room. What made Rona special was not just her voice but the fact that she was able to convey emotions as she sang. It was almost as though, when you listened to her, you were transported somewhere else. Combined with almost near perfect technique, the classroom completely fell silent. It was almost as though everyone had fallen under the spell in which Rona was casting as she was singing. When she had finished, there was almost 0 reaction for a couple of seconds. Clark snapped out of his daze and applauded. The other professors and classmates joined in the applause.
Clark, we have a budding star on our hands!
The professors were all buzzing, they had seen Rona's audition tape but to hear her singing live was a completely different feeling.
Indeed, she would need to be mentored personally early.
Note: Since I am introducing new characters, do expect the story to feature and focus on them as well (: So please give these new characters love as well (:
