The car ride home was painfully quiet at first. Neither of you knew what to say about your failed date. It was scary that in such a short time, Chase had become so important to you but any fear that should have brought on was drowned out by how solid he kept coming through for you.

You looked over and noticed that Chase seemed to be in his own little world. You decided to break your silence: "Just how much of that did you see?"
Chase: "Enough to know you were out with the wrong guy, that's for sure."
You: "He was a real piece of work, huh?"
Chase: "You clearly hit it off with the tall kid. Why are you doing this online match thing if you already have Mr Tall-dark-and-handsome falling over his words for you."
You: "That was Josh. He IS one of the guys from online. Remember the one that I tried to accept a date from and you told me to play the field?"
Chase laughed: "I stand corrected. Definitely accept that date."
You: "I would have loved to but he kinda ghosted me after I backtracked."
Chase: "I know the feeling."
There it was again. The sad Chase that seemed to be floating away in his own little world. Tayler would have blown up on you for prying but you took a chance that Chase was different... after all he'd given you every indication he was.
You: "You and Charli still fighting?"
He pulled the car into his driveway and sighed before climbing out: "We'd have to be speaking to fight."
You hurried out to catch him before he could get inside of his house. You stood in front of him and as he tried to move around you, pulled him into a tight hug. He smelled so good it was distracting. A mixture of leather from his jacket and a ocean-water cologne. He accepted the comfort but stayed stiff for a few moments until you whispered into his chest: "Everything's gonna be okay. We got each other's backs from now on, right?"

His body collapsed into a tighter hug as you felt all of his stress leave his body. After a few moments you pulled back and he flashed his boyish smile at you. He changed the mood by playfully tousling your hair as you pull away trying to act annoyed by such a big brother move. Your smile gave you away, though.
You: "Yeah, you're gonna be just fine."
Chase: "You really are my best friend. You know that?"
You: "Yeah, I know that."
He motioned goodbye as he paused at his door to make sure that you made it inside safely. What had started as a pretty crappy first date had actually kept getting better. After you closed the front door, you paused to check your phone again but still no message from Josh... or Jaden for that matter.
