Jaden yelled out into the darkness: “Chase! CHASE!!! STOP!!”
Chase turned around in his driveway and warned: “Jaden, leave me alone. I don’t want to talk to you.”

Jaden finally caught up to the boy that had been on his mind for months and took a deep breath as he prepared to say what he was finally getting the chance to say: “I don’t understand at all. Why won’t you even be seen with me?”
Chase looked around to make sure there were no last minute stragglers arriving at the party who might hear: “You know why.”
Jaden was more confused than ever: “No, I really don’t. I thought we decided to be just friends. You can’t be seen with your guy friends?”

Chase couldn’t even find the words to respond because he knew Jaden was right. He was the one being totally unreasonable and the only person paying for it was his best friend.
His best friend that he was still so hopelessly in love with. He really thought seeing her move on would help him get over her but the guy she was with barely made time for her which made it hard to see it lasting.
He tried to put some distance between him and her... well as much distance as he could from a girl who's bedroom window looked into his when the curtains were both open. All the purpose that was meant to serve completely failed because she was always upset with him lately and he just missed her so much it hurt.
None of that mattered though because his Mom was right. He'd confided in her and she was quick to point out that if you really truly love someone you want them to have what THEY want in life even more than what you want. He really was trying.
Jaden: “Look, I liked you. You already knew that. But I’m never going to push more on you when you’ve made it really clear that you’re not into me at all.”
Chase leaned back against the wall of his porch: “That’s not true. I did like you. I really liked you.”
Jaden's brow furrowed in confusion: “Then why-”
Chase quickly added: “But it doesn’t matter because things changed and I met someone who I completely fell for.”
Jaden: “Then why aren’t you with them?”
Chase barely choked out: “Because they don’t want me back.”
Jaden moved closer and vowed: “Look, I’m not going anywhere. I’m not going to pressure you at all, but I’m not going anywhere. So you work out what you need to and if you decide you want anything to come of my feelings then you let me know. Until then… just friends, okay?”
Chase shocked even himself by pulling Jaden’s collar towards him and kissing him, softly in the shadows outside of the party.
Jaden pulled back after a moment in absolute shock: "Wh- what was that for?"
Chase smiled: "It's goodbye... for now."
