You rushed inside, calling your mom’s name. It felt weird to feel like your heart couldn’t settle without talking to her of all people. Things had changed between the 2 of you and definitely for the better the further away your dad pulled. She went out of her way to invite you to do stuff with her, take care of you, listen to you, defend you... It's like she spent so long being distracted by begging your Dad to care about her and one day she just woke up and decided to focus on something else that already did. You were worried about what it'd mean for their marriage but couldn't lie. You were just so grateful to have the mom back that you'd had as a little girl.

Mom came out from the kitchen with a big smile:
“Honey, you’re home!!”

She pulled you into a tight hug:
“I’ve been so worried about you. Do you feel better after a night away?”

You: “I still don’t know what I’m going to do about anything but yeah, I feel better.”

Mom: “Well for starters, you need to press charges against Noah.”

You: "He was arrested last night but I don't know for what?"

Mom: "I didn't call the police. I wanted to wait until you got home so I could talk to you first. I thought maybe we could do it together."

You were hesitant: "I don't know... Wait. Does Dad know? Did he maybe call?"

Mom: "I can't imagine he did that. He knows what Noah did at the party but has no idea what he was running from yesterday."

You: "Then what does he think Noah was-"

Your question got distracted by Josh facetiming you:
"Hi. I'm kinda in the middle of something with my mom. Can I call you back?"

Josh: "I- I shouldn't have called, I'm sorry."

You: "No, I'm sorry. I'm glad you did. What did you need?"

Josh: "I just- I heard what Noah did to you and then heard he was arrested and I didn't know if you needed me- just I'm stupid. I'm sorry."

You: "Wait. You said that last night so, why did you really call?"

Josh: "I guess I just needed to hear your voice."

You felt your heart leap into the most confusing swirl of emotions. You thought for sure that anything that had been building with Josh was dead. He seemed so shut down and cold when he left the party. But, maybe he really was just as confused as you?

You: "Can I call you later? Maybe we can talk?"

Josh seemed to struggle to get out the word yes but you could see the hopefulness in his eyes and found yourself clinging to it. He said goodbye and ended the call, quickly but it couldn't stop the smile from spreading across your face.

Your mom smiled back, a knowing smile and asked:
"Can we finish this talk, sweetheart."

You: "Not right now. I promise, later ok?"

Should we confide in mom about our boy troubles and hope she has insight?
