The next day you woke up to a note on your dresser. Your mom and dad had gone out before you’d even woken up. Someone spilled a drink all over your white sofa and they didn’t seem bothered by just replacing it. Your mother never showed away from an excuse to redecorate some room in the house.

You fixed your hair and headed downstairs to find some breakfast. You were startled to find half a dozen people filling the house with the sounds and smell of a deep clean. You were surveying the damage while the cleaning company your mom hired was doing their best to get the rest of the mess under control.

You wandered into the kitchen, not sure what you could eat that wouldn't leave a mess for the hard working people who just got that room spotless. You dug a pop tart out of the cabinet and decided to skip toasting it when you heard the doorbell ring.

You figured it was just another member of the cleaning crew needing let in. To your shock, Noah towered over you at the door when you swung it open.

You: “What are you doing here?”

Noah: “I’m really sorry about last night. I know I keep saying sorry but I just don’t know what got into me. It’s not who I am at all.”

You: “Sure seems like it lately.”

You swung the door shut as you walked away, but Noah stopped it with his foot. You heard him step inside and chills spread down your spine. You just shook your head in disgust but figured if he pushed again, there were enough people in the house to step in. Even if they were all strangers to you.

You: “You didn’t answer my question, Noah. What are you even doing here?”

Noah: “I lost my wallet here somewhere and I thought maybe you had found it and you didn’t answer my texts.”

You: “I blocked you.”

It sounded like an excuse to get you by yourself again but since you weren't alone you figured there was no harm in entertaining his lie at least long enough to tire out this particular excuse so he'd just leave you alone.

He watched as you dug through the cushions of the destroyed sofa and in every other little nook amd cranny a wallet could have been set.

Noah: "No luck?"

You: "Why don't I check outside. From what I heard, you'd spent quite a bit of time on your back out there."

The dig didn't go over his head as he grasped his still sore ribs that served as a reminder of the beating he'd endured.

Noah: "Don't remind me."

You: "Maybe reminding you would finally get through to you that we were just friends."

Noah: "We are friends. We can be."

You: "No, actually, we can't."

You walked through the kitchen to search the backyard.
