62: Fixing Things

Your mom spent the rest of the afternoon calming you down. It felt good to be close to her again. You thought about finally coming clean about why and how things ended with Tayler but you were afraid to bring it up out of nowhere. Maybe next time the subject came up you'd be braver.

After your mom had calmed you down, you went outside to grab your phone charger from your car. Josh had promised to facetime you tonight and you didn’t really want to be upstairs alone until then just so you could charge it. He had to cancel the last 2 times you'd planned to video chat because he'd gotten caught up with his brother. He was doing a lot better at texting though.

As you walked back to the house, you saw Chase’s parents leaving. His mom waved to you and you smiled. You saw his car still parked in the driveway so without thinking, you marched over and knocked on the door. You knew better than to just barge in after what you’d walked in on last time.

Chase opened the door:
“What did you forget- Oh. It’s you.”

Your face scowled back:
“What does that mean? Yes it’s me! You’ve been ignoring my calls and texts.”

Chase walked away leaving the door open so you took that as an invitation to follow him... and you did just that.

You: “Will you please talk to me, Chase.”

Chase: “See the whole not answering was kind of a hint that I didn’t want to do this.”

He was being unnecessarily mean but you refused to give up. You could see the pain behind his eyes as he spoke. You couldn't help but wonder if all this was about the sheer dumb luck of your internet date being the same guy as the time he'd gotten confused about his sexuality with. Maybe that was the problem? Maybe Jaden was right... What if the problem was that Chase wasn't confused at all? Maybe Chase liked boys and girls just like Jaden did and he just needed to see that all the people who loved him would be just fine if he ended up with a boy.

You were worried that bringing it up might push Chase even further away but you couldn't let him just keep hiding from who he was meant to be and .aybe even meant to be with. Besides, if he really didn’t want to do this right now then he wouldn’t have left the door open when he walked away. That was basically an invitation.

You: “Here’s the thing, Chase. Want or not, we ARE doing this.”

You sat across from him in the living room and waited for him to kick you out but he sat silent, clutching a couch pillow to his chest, and looking as if he was using it to hold back tears. Your heart absolutely broke for your best friend.

Should we plot to get him and Jaden together?
