"Levi." A new voice rang from behind the office door. It jolted you back to reality; you had spent the past several minutes spacing out while Levi worked behind his desk. He hadn't given you any chores to do and you were consigned to silently wait for another command.
"Come in," Levi said.
You felt like no more than a decorative piece when the new guest entered and ignored you as he began speaking to Levi.
"I'm sorry to interrupt, Levi." The unknown man stood at attention in front of the desk, holding three cardboard boxes of various sizes.
"You don't come around often, Varis. Did Dhalis send you?"
"Perceptive as ever. Yes, he did."
"What does he need?"
"He bought you a computer," Varis announced as he set the cargo on the table.
"Hm? I didn't ask for one."
"You can bring it up with him. I'm just the messenger. Sorry." Varis shrugged.
"Good grief," Levi muttered to himself.
"Do you want me to set it up for you?" Varis offered.
"No. I'll take care of it." Levi shook his head. "You're dismissed."
"Have a good afternoon, Levi." The man left the room, giving you no acknowledgment.
Levi watched the door close, then scoffed. "Did you suggest this idea to Dhalis?" He pointed his pen at the boxes.
"No! Not at all." You held up your hands in defense. "I haven't spoken to him."
He sighed. "It seems I can't refuse it. Go on, unpackage it."
"Okay." You stood up and began sorting the boxes, selecting one of the larger ones first. You pierced the duct tape with your fingernail, slicing the flaps open and peering inside.
"Yeah, definitely a computer. Pretty nice one, too." You hoisted the monitor out, shaking off bits of Styrofoam and packaging.
"Oi, don't make a mess. You'd better clean that up."
"I will." You plucked off a few foam bits and dropped them back in the box. "Where exactly do you want this?"
"I don't care. Wherever works."
You set the monitor on the corner of his desk then retrieved another box. Inside was the computer tower. The final box held the accessories: keyboard, mouse, and all the little wires that connected the machines.
"So much junk." Levi detested the sight of the technology.
"It's helpful, Levi. I can show you how to use it."
"I don't need to be taught. I'll manage just fine."
"If you say so." You smiled, beginning to plug in different wires into the back of the machine and wiring them to the monitor. Levi watched you plug in the two power cords in the wall, completing the process. "I'll get it set up. Software and whatnot." You stayed on your side of the desk, moving the monitor to face you.
"Such an eyesore," he complained.
"Uh, I can put the computer tower underneath the desk, if that would help?" You patted the black box.
"Yes, go ahead."
"Okay."
Finding the subtle desk grommet, you began removing the wires you had just installed and stringing them through the hole. With the computer detached, you moved to Levi's side and placed the box on the floor.
