You were already amazed with the sheer size and splendor of the passing houses, unable to believe that any one of them could be Erwin's. They were nothing short of miniature castles, each with its own sprawling lawn and spacious driveway. No two were alike, allowing for a diverse exhibition of the most exquisite architecture money could buy.
Expensive, was the only thought cycling in your head, your brain struggling to calculate what just a single home could cost. Further aristocracy was boasted by the occasional luxury car parked outside, a commodity so common for the residents it would be unordinary to have anything less.
When Levi eventually turned into one of the driveways, you couldn't help but let out a breathy "Holy shit," at what was likely Erwin's house.
A luscious green lawn preceded the mansion, interrupted only by the symmetrical roundabout just before the entrance. This roundabout included a branching path that likely led to the garage on the side of the house, though Levi parked in front of the main entrance.
Stepping out, you had to gawk in amazement at the manor before you. It was as symmetrical at its driveway, walls the color of alabaster spreading out on either side and plated with an array of windows. It was at least two stories, though the height of the grey, sloped roof implied a possible third floor or attic. Marble steps ascended to the mahogany double doors of the main entrance, a doorway framed with thick pillars that matched the bow window they supported.
"This is enormous. You really undersold it, Levi."
"And only one man lives here. Awfully self-indulgent of him." Levi locked his car, expressing much less interest in the residence he had visited multiple times.
You took careful steps up to the door, almost afraid to taint the spotless stairs. Reaching for one of the eloquent golden knockers, you held it delicately and rapped it against its metal plate.
Only a few moments later, both doors were opened by the man as lavish as his house. Erwin was already softly smiling, pleased to see his two friends. "You don't have to knock," he began. "You are always welcome inside."
"I don't know if I could do that," you laughed nervously. "I don't feel like I deserve to step inside even now."
"Get a hold of yourself," Levi chided. "We can live in a place just as nice next year. You might as well get used to the luxury."
"Come in, please." Erwin stepped aside, allowing you access to his home.
You did try to take Levi's advice and remain collected, but the beauty of the interior was even more impressive than the exterior. Entering into the main foyer, your brain was overwhelmed with the visual stimulation of the sumptuous room and its details. You first chose the two sets of arched stairs to take in, following their path to a sort of interior balcony that surely led to more unseen rooms. Underneath the stairways, the floorspace continued past the stair hall and into a gigantic living room with the glass-door exit to the terrace just beyond.
"Don't space out, (y/n)," Levi cut through your thoughts of amazement.
"Sorry," you replied instinctually, continuing your visual exploration with haste to avoid appearing too entranced. A dining area on the right, adjacent to the kitchen that was eventually connected to the living room. On the left, a painting-adorned wall was interrupted by a hallway that disappeared to some unknown part of the house.
"Would you like to look around? Or shall I show you to your room so you can get settled?" Erwin had directed the question to both of you, but Levi refused to answer and allowed you to decide.
"Um, our room for now." I really do want to look around, but I can't childishly ask to explore the place. I'd feel a little silly.
"Certainly. It's upstairs," Erwin said as he began ascending the right partner of the staircases. You followed, Levi behind.
