Erwin was waiting against the door of his car when you and Levi neared him in the parking lot. He looked hopeful, like he had been waiting for hours to hear the result of your interview. You approached him apprehensively, torn between what you conjured about him during the interview and what Levi suggested about him afterwards.
"Shall we go home?" he offered once you were close enough.
"You look like a giddy child," Levi chided as he circled the car, already throwing himself into the passenger seat.
"I must not be too good at hiding it," Erwin remarked to only you as you both watched Levi disappear.
"I didn't notice," you said semi-truthfully. "Did you want to know about the interview?"
"Yes. I'd naturally take an interest in the progress of my previous intern." Erwin kept an innocent smile fixed on his face, that same charming expression he used to appear like the blameless king he wanted to be.
"Yeah, right," you accused. "You don't have to cushion it so much. You just want to know if I'm succeeding in getting the job or not."
"That's true, yes." Erwin ran his hand along the car as he meandered to the back door, sliding his fingers underneath the handle and opening it for you. "I'd like to see how new potential employees are doing."
You stepped closer to the car, peering at Levi inside before glancing up at Erwin. "Of course you would, Dean," you nearly whispered.
"Keep it down," he warned with a small shake of his head. "Still a secret."
"I know, I know." You grinned, pleased to have taken a smidgen of control over the conversation. "It would be a real shame if I let that slip, huh?"
"You wouldn't," he declared as if it were a fact. "Now get in the car, please."
You acquiesced, excited to prod at the king but hesitant to push his temper. Toying with the secret he wanted hidden was a small luxury you were pleased to have, and a foot in the door of his capabilities should you want to explore them. It came almost too easily, the ability to snuff out bits of information that could be advantageous if you desired.
"I'm in," you announced as you sunk into the backseat, and Erwin shut the door without a word.
"You two sharing secrets?" Levi hissed from the passenger seat.
"We'd never." You slouched against the car door, returning his accusatory glare.
"You'd better not be," Levi continued as Erwin entered the driver's seat. "If you were, I'd be able to force an answer out of you in an instant."
"Always one for threats, aren't you?" Erwin commented halfheartedly as he started the car.
"Yes," Levi snapped. "Do you have an issue with it?"
"Not really. That's your style." Erwin planted a firm hand on Levi's headrest, his torso turning to see out the rearview. "Anyways, would either of you indulge me in telling me about the interview?" He briefly glanced at you while the car reversed, pressuring you to answer.
"It went fine." Levi did first, his head tilting away from Erwin's close hand. "Just a regular interview. We'll move on to the job talk in a week or so."
"That was quick. Are you certain about what you're doing?" Erwin returned his hands to the wheel and continued out of the lot.
"Yes," Levi huffed, offended by Erwin's implication. "I'm not a toadying dimwit, for pity's sake. She's progressing quickly because she's good."
