You and Levi were the first to arrive at the luxury hotel several miles from campus. The building you entered was as pristine as expected, adding to the troves of opulence you had encountered during your time at Paradis. Bright chandeliers lit the grand space of the hotel lobby, reflecting off gold ornamentations that flourished in the decoration of the walls and ceiling. It felt Renaissance in style, though it fused with a modern elegance that coalesced into an effective display of grandeur and purity.
After checking in and retrieving your luggage, you were soon ascending in a glass elevator that overlooked the lobby, carrying both suitcases while Levi stood empty-handed.
"Hey, I thought you did great on stage," you said.
"Hm."
"You talked about what I wrote really well. It was impressive."
"Don't butter me up." Levi frowned.
"I'm not." You shifted your weight to the other leg. "I honestly thought you were incredible."
"Whatever." The elevators slid open. Levi entered the hallway, expecting you to tag along. He found your adjacent hotel rooms and unlocked his own. "Take my case in."
The hotel room was bigger than your studio apartment, though smaller than Levi's. Its sterility offered no comfort or hominess, emphasized by the wide floor space occupied by nothing but a king bed and a few measly pieces of furniture. You set the cases along a bare wall, lining them up against each other.
"For what it's worth..." Levi shut the door behind him, then subtly locked it. "I appreciate it."
"Appreciate what?"
"Your speech. At the end of the day, I only recited what you wrote. It's dishonest for me to take all the credit." He shed his blazer and dropped it on the coffee table situated in the small sitting area adjacent to the door.
"Oh." You scratched the back of your head. "It's not a problem. Well, it kinda was, but whatever."
He gently rolled up his white sleeves and undid a couple buttons at the collar of his shirt. It seems he had chosen to not wear a tie today intentionally. "You work well at midnight. Perhaps I'll employ your services at those hours more often."
"I'd rather you not." You laughed. "I won't be able to come to work if I'm always exhausted."
"You'd just have to get used to it." Levi drew closer to you.
"The human body can only take so much," you stated. "You're already testing its limits on me."
"Its limits? Believe me, you're nowhere near your limit," Levi growled, riddling your brain with an apprehensiveness that dared you to explore his suggestion. Your heart panged in your chest, excited with the thrill of Levi's words.
"How would you know?" you retorted with the most intimidating response you could think of.
"As you said before, I have a history of physical activity. I know what a body like yours can and can't take."
It was obvious the conversation had shifted from one regarding lack of sleep. Neither of you would say it aloud, but the silent emotions permeating the air darkened the tone and implied the surfacing of impure thoughts.
"Is that my purpose, then? To work as a lab rat for Levi's little experiment on how much a person can take?" You subdued your internal reactions and kept a steadfast persona.
"It is." He stated it not as a threat, but as a guarantee. "You've failed to express any objection to such tests."
"That doesn't mean I want them."
