Finals week was a painful routine, but a necessary one. Classes wrapped up smoothly and students gave their goodbyes on the day of their last class with Professor Levi. Some promised to see him next year, while others guaranteed they would never see him again. A few tossed out the idea of working as a TA under him in the future, a concept he stay ambiguous about. You and Levi were able to finish classes on Thursday, with no scheduled periods on Friday. The following Saturday night would be the winter banquet.
Friday evening, you finished submitting the last of your due papers in your apartment, happy to have the work over with. I'm already set for classes next semester, so no need to worry about that. I don't have many left, anyways. It's just about writing this damn thesis.
Your phone rang with a call from Levi. "Hi, Levi!" you said jubilantly as you answered the call.
"Hello. Have you finished your exams?"
"Yeah. I got the bulk of them done on Thursday, and finished all my submissions today."
"Good. I'm proud of you. You did well."
"Thank you." Your face still heated up at his words, struggling to familiarize itself with his gooey sentiments. "I'm sure you still have a lot of work to get done, right? You've got a lot of finals to grade."
"Not much left. I'll be finished by tomorrow."
"That's good to hear. I can help, if you ever need me to."
"No. It's your semester break, and you deserve the rest as a student. Let me finish my job as a professor."
"Alright."
"Listen, I called about tomorrow. I'm sorry, but I won't be able to pick you up for the banquet. It turns out I need to give a ride to someone else."
"Not a problem! It's totally alright." You closed your laptop, satisfied with your work. "Who do you need to pick up?"
Levi took a while to reply, for no discernable reason. "Kiyomi Azumabito. She's a faculty member from Hizuru Academy."
"Oh, taking other women in your car now?"
"I'll turn her down, if it really bothers you."
"No, I'm just teasing. I trust your loyalty too, you know."
"Okay. How will you get to the university?"
"I'll take the bus. It's not a problem."
"Hm." Levi didn't like that solution, but he also didn't like the alternative of asking someone else to take you. "Okay. Be very careful tomorrow. I still don't know if Caven is up to anything."
"I will. I'll be safe."
"Good. I need to work now, so I'm going to let you go. Have a good evening."
"Yeah, you too, Levi."
You had never been to the nicer banquet halls on campus, but found them just as spectacular as you had imagined. On Saturday evening, you came to the university and had made your way to the designated building housing the function. Nearly double the size of Helos Hall in Marley, the ballroom you entered was brilliantly illuminated with chandeliers that beamed golden light from their ornate branches.
Having arrived alone, you were tasked with finding friends or socializing with strangers until Levi showed up.
There's Rico. Oh, and Lynne. You spotted the members of the literature department amongst the sea of faces. Hm, Miche is over there, along with Hange and Moblit. More faculty members were found amongst unknown guests. I dunno who I should talk to. Should I try to find someone new?
