You had found Armin's room after a quick check-in at the front desk, the student on duty willing to give you the answer once you feigned an urgent enough excuse. It is blatant lying, but I don't have any malintent.
You hesitated outside Armin's door on the second floor. Is this right? I mean, I'm showing up late at night to a student's dormitory. Asking for his friend's number, no less. It just sounds wrong. Exhaling, you shook away your worries before knocking. No, Armin is rational. He'll understand.
"Oh, good evening, (y/n)." Armin opened up, still dressed in his suit. He must have gotten back recently.
"Hi, Armin." You made sure to stay outside his room, in the hall. "I have a favor to ask."
"What is it?"
"I need to get in contact with Zeke Yeager. I don't have his information, but I assume his brother does. Do you happen to have Eren's number?"
"Yeah, I do." Armin responded immediately, then took a moment to think. "If it's alright with you, can I call Eren myself? I think that would be safer."
"Of course! You're probably right." Faculty probably shouldn't be calling students unsolicited this late at night. Not that I am faculty, but the distinction is really blurry in my case.
"Great. Just a second." Armin headed to his desk inside, picking up his phone and dialing his friend. "Hey, Eren," he began as he returned to the doorway. "Yeah, I'm good. I have a request, though. I need Zeke's number." He listened to Eren's response. "No, Dr. Smith is asking for it. It turns out the two of them are planning a guest lecture but they couldn't get in contact."
Oh, wow. He's just going to lie like that?
"No, Zeke's number isn't online. We've already looked. The only number provided was for the Marleyan academic affairs department." Armin waited a moment. "Yeah, that would be great. I really appreciate it, Eren. You can just text it to me." He nodded as he spoke, subtle confirmation that the mission was a success. "Thank you. Have a good night. Yeah, you too, Eren." Armin hung up, then looked at you. "Well, I got his number."
"You're the best, Armin. You really are impressive."
"It isn't much." Armin glanced down at as phone.
"I'm surprised you made up a story like that. I wasn't expecting it."
"Oh, that." Armin treated his deceit flippantly, as though it were a passing thought. "Eren and his brother aren't that close, so I just wanted to make it seem important enough so Eren wouldn't question it. I hope you don't mind."
"Not at all. I probably would have done the same thing." Though not as smoothly as you, I admit. You have an odd talent for that sort of thing.
"I thought so. Well, here." Armin extended his phone, showing the digital number Eren had sent in a text. You withdrew your own phone and typed it in, adding another contact to your list.
"Great. Thank you again, Armin. This is really helpful."
"Yes, of course." Armin didn't even bother asking why you needed Zeke's number, keeping the mystery for himself to solve. "Is there anything else?"
"Not that I know of. Please, have a good semester break. You really deserve it."
"Yeah, I'll try," he promised.
"I hope to see you around campus, Armin. Keep up the good work."
"Thank you. Good night, (y/n)."
