Two weeks passed, your winter break chugging along mundanely. You hadn't had a chance to meet with Erwin since the summit, your superior being far too busy with a myriad of further business meetings to allocate time for you. Thus, your question remained unanswered for much longer than you were expecting. You weren't sure if you needed it answered quickly, though. Either the answer would drastically change things, or it would change nothing at all, and neither were conclusions you were anxious to reach.
Levi, too, was busy preparing coursework for the upcoming semester, slowly making the transition back into Professor Levi as the days went on. He ended up claiming your laptop often for work, finding quite the benefit in the technology he usually avoided.
Christmas morning arrived, on some dreary Saturday that otherwise didn't seem different from any other day of the week. You and Levi hadn't really been hyping up the holidays, anyways.
The shrill ring of a phone call awoke you quite early, earlier than you had wanted. You blinked awake on one end of your shared bed with Levi, unable to see anything in the apartment bedroom that was typically left rather dark.
"Shit," Levi's frame moved the sheets as he hoisted himself to a seated position, grumbling to himself over the unwanted alarm clock. "I forgot to turn my ringer down."
"Who's calling?" you mumbled into your pillow.
"Good grief. Unknown number." He sighed as he declined the call.
"Who'd be calling on Christmas day?" you pondered mindlessly.
"I don't know." He fell back into the sheets and rolled to face you, pulling your body into his. "I don't care. Let's sleep for a bit longer."
"Sure," you breathed, too exhausted to want anything else.
When you two finally did wake up, you got ready for the day together before Levi hurried to begin making breakfast. While he was busy, you finished up sending a few merry texts to several colleagues.
You noticed Levi's phone light up with another incoming call, originating from an unsaved string of numbers. Geez. I wouldn't think telemarketers would be so persistent. Not on Christmas, either.
"Levi, your phone's ringing again." You brought his device to the main room, showing him the caller name.
"Tch." He glanced back momentarily before resuming his attendance of a saucepan. "Ignore it. If it's so important, whoever it is will leave a message."
"Okay." You crossed to the dining table and set it down, conjuring a few theories as to who the caller could be. "Are you sure you don't want to do anything today?"
"I don't, but I'm willing to if you do." Levi focused on stirring the pan's contents. "I'm just not that interested in the holidays."
"That's alright with me! I'm happy as long as I'm with you."
"Hm." He nodded to himself, still hiding his appreciation of your sentiments after all this time.
"Oh, my." You watched the phone on the table ring with yet another incoming call, though this time from someone recognizable. "Furlan's calling."
"Ah." Levi quickly moved to wash his hands, then headed to the table. "I'll get it. Tend to the food."
"Sure." You traded places with him, listening to him answer the phone while you took up his job.
"Hello, Furlan." Levi pulled back a chair for himself while he began conversing. "Hello to you too, Isabel."
Customary Christmas call, I guess. I'm glad he keeps in touch with old friends. They didn't seem to discuss much beyond small talk, though most of it involved Levi claiming he didn't have any plans for the day, and turning on the downpour of suggestions his callers were offering. "Just me and (y/n) for today," he had declared. "I really don't need much more beyond that."
