The next day Lin Chong was outside talking on the phone to her banker, pacing the ground. "Nine precent interest on business loans?! That's ridiculous! Are you sure you can't offer me something lower?! You are a bank for goodness sake! Please, I already got a job and I'm going to return the money really, really soon. If you can just hear me out. My ex-husband is going to take the house and my daughter away from me if I can't provide her. Pay for her tuition fees and pay for the house bills! So please, if you could just give me five minutes. He is a really manipulative...hello? Hello?" She looked down at her phone seeing that the bank hung up.
Samuel was watching the whole thing when he was going out to go check on her and he felt pity for her so he had a big surprise for her at the end of the day. After Lin Chong's working spree she ended at eight PM pushing in the chairs.
"Here. This is for you." Samuel walked to her handing her a white slip of paper. She took it looking at it.
"What's this?" A smile creeped up on her face as she opened it.
"It's your pay for the month and a bit of bonus as well."
She slipped the check back in its slip shaking her head. "I can't take this, I haven't earned it."
"It's okay. It's just an advanced payment. You'll work up to it. It must be difficult raising your daughter alone at home. I hope this helps the situation."
"But it's not right. I just started, I can't take this from you. Not right now."
"It's okay. It's basically yours anyway."
"Yeah it's fine." She took his hand, placing the slip of paper in his hands. "You can give it to me at the right time, after I've earned this. But thank you. Good night." She slung her bag over her shoulder leaving the restaurant leaving him nodding his head smiling.
Meanwhile, Vic was with her father at the ramen restaurant. They sat at the bar getting kimchi chicken wings.
"I just feel a bit bad for how I left home. I wish I had a proper conversation with her, before making such a big commitment." Vic said to her father.
"Listen Vic. Your mom isn't good with conversations. I bet she didn't tell you that she's jobless either." Fred replied.
Vic turned to look at him. "What? She works at a new school and the students there really love her."
"That's what she wants you to think. Lin Chong has never been able to put down her ego. And she never will. So just let it be and eventually she'll realize that she needs me."
Suddenly the door opened and in came his girlfriend, Aiko. "Hello." She walked towards him, embracing him in a giant hug before sitting down.
"Hi sweetie." He kissed her cheek.
"Dad. Why is she here?" Vic asked feeling like she was third wheeling.
"Well it so happens that it is also Aiko's favorite place. She really loves the sushi here." He wrapped an arm around Aiko turning his head to her. "Don't you sweetie?"
She nodded her head. "So I was thinking for our new home in Shanghai, we should have a marble table with those Greek statues as the center piece. What do you think?"
"Anything you want sweetie. How about the crystal chandelier you had your eye on?"
"Oh yeah that would look great in our new home."
Vic decided to join in on the conversation so she tried to bring up something that was related. "So Dad about China..."
"What about it?" Yet he didn't turn to face her.
