Sophomore year of college began before anyone knew it. Time was flying by faster and faster by the days. Marinette suddenly began to play mahjong more than usual and her mom decided she should play against someone for competition. Suddenly Mari's comfort game got turned into competition and winning. Lindo, Lena and Suyuan still played with her and they became very close.

The night before Mari's big game Lindo invited the three of them to a game at her house. They all sat down in their spots. Lena sat on the north, Mari sat on the east, Suyuan sat on the south and Lindo sat on west.

When I got invited to the mahjong game I realized for the first time they wanted me to take my mother's place since they didn't like Tsai's daughter that well.

"You win like your ah ma?" Asked Suyuan.

"I get a few lucky breaks. Ever since when I bumped into you guys that was my first time in nine years I finally played. The last time I played was with some Jewish friends."

"Hmmph! Jewish mahjong, not the same thing. Entirely different. Now, Chinese mahjong very tricky. You have to watch what everybody throw out," Lindo exclaimed with a little chuckle exchanging one if her pieces. "And keep all this in your head. And if nobody play well, then the game is just like Jewish mahjong. No strategy. You French girls play Chinese, Jewish. What's the difference?"

They all laughed. "Yeah, but tomorrow is the big day. The mahjong match."

"Just don't get stressed out. So, you planning to stay in Paris your whole life?" Asked Lena.

"No, when I graduate I might go off somewhere in Asia. What about you guys?"

"We here for vacation. We live in Taiwan. Taiwan is free China. No communism. Free beliefs." Explained Suyuan.

"God bless that." Said Lena.

"How did you guys meet?" She asked.

"We all met in church. I recall meeting Tsai during bible study and she introduced me to Lena. I introduced Suyuan to them. So, we technically met each other through each other. Though we were not born into Christian belief, but we later converted." Lindo spoke.

"You know guys. Throughout all religions they all mention Jesus. I was thinking that they all are related in some way." Suyuan started up on her usual theories.

"Alamak! I always hear about that!" Exclaimed Lena.

"I do believe it though." Lindo laughed.

"Can I just say thank you to guys. It's just nice talking to you guys. Ms. Lindo, Ms. Lena and Ms. Suyuan."

"You're a sweet talker! Call us auntie." Said Suyuan.

"Xièxiè."

The next day came and it was time for the mahjong tournament. Mari went up against three people who looked around her age. There, her mother watched her play in the audience. Time passed and then, they showed their pieces. Then, to Sabine and Mari's relief Mari won.

The winning spread its way out everywhere and papers were soon published. Sabine was proud of her daughter to where she stayed two extra days in Paris to boast about her daughter using a Life magazine. The two walked around Paris in their finest clothes. Sabine had the Life magazine with her daughter's face on it showing it off to everyone who they knew. The magazine was titled:

Sabine Cheng's daughter's new talent?!

"You not you see Life magazine?" Sabine asked a man while showing him the magazine.

"No."

"I told my daughter: 'use strategy to outsmart the enemy.' She won very quickly this way."

"Oh, good."

"Bye-bye."

"Bye-bye."

They continued walking. "Ah, Mrs. Chu! Ni hao. Oh, you know my daughter, Marinette Cheng, mahjong champion."

"Smart girl! Bye!" Exclaimed Mrs. Chu.

"Bye-bye."

"I wish you wouldn't do that, telling everyone I'm your daughter." Huffed Marinette.

"What you mean? You so ashamed to be with your mother?"

"It's not that. It's just that it's so...embarrassing, that's all."

"What? Embarrassed to be my daughter?"

"That's not what I said."

"Then what you say? Look at me. Look at me!"

Slowly she lifted her head up facing her. "Why do you have to use me to show off? If you want to show off, then why don't you learn to play mahjong?"

"What is wrong with you?! Why can't you just go with the flow and just be like me?!"

"I'll never be the kind of daughter that you want me to be!"

"There two kinds of daughter: obedient or follow own mind. Only one kind of daughter could be a Cheng: obedient kind."

"Then I wish I wasn't your daughter! I wish you weren't my mom!"

"Too late to change this."

"I will never play mahjong again. I wish I was dead." She sneered before wiping away her tear, walking away.

"One day quit, next day play. Everything for you is this way. So smart, so easy, so fast. Not so easy anymore." She watched her daughter stop and tense up. Sabine just sighed and walked the opposite direction leaving her daughter once again.
