Slow Motion

After the four days of business talk with Sabine Cheng, Marinette decided to go out go check out what they had in Shanghai. Mostly she was in it for the food. She walked around for awhile and came to a rest by the fountain. "Hey Marinette." It was Eric. "It's nice to see you again."

"Oh hey Eric." She replied.

"Let me guess. You finally got away from business talk?"

"Yeah. Dam, my mom really wants me to know this crap."

He chuckled. "Most of it is family legacy and half of it is because you have no brother. Like what Peik Lin Goh said in Crazy Rich Asians, Chinese sons think their moms fart Chanel No. 5."

"I think we all know that movie by now."

"Yeah."

"So Hao told me that you stole his tuck shop money when you guys were kids?"

"You have his number?"

"Well we go to the same school and things are complicated."

"Why? Let me guess, guys."

"Yep."

"Who did what?"

"Well Adrien and Hao have a crush over me, so does Luka, but we don't talk so yeah..."

"Dang, Hao found love. All what he needs now is just for you to return it."

"But I'm not sure."

"Okay, who's this Adrien?"

"Adrien Agreste."

"That guy? That famous model that everyone had a crush on?"

"Yep. He's also my ex."

"So he wants you back which tells you something. Like who ended the relationship though?"

"Me."

"Reason?"

"Fame and crappy shiz like that. Did you had to go through that?"

"Eh no. I just had a kiss in the rain with my ex girlfriend."

"The thing is that Adrien and Hao confessed. I haven't responded yet."

"Well, who do you think that you love?"

"That's the problem. I don't know."

"This is the stage when some people go through a certain crisis. You need to interact with strangers, hurt them, get hurt by them. Learn about people and learn about yourself too. If you don't then you will not be capable of true empathy. So just go back, go back before you were unsure about your feelings. If you don't then whatever was offered to you will be gone. It's like slow motion, but there will always be a timer. A timer to tell you that you ran out of time or to tell you that you made it. Of course me as a person, I was never patient to place the broken pieces together. When something is broken, it's broken. Maybe I'm too old to believe in that second chance stuff, but you have until you graduate college."

"I...just don't really know. They both mean something to me."

"Then that tells you that you are possibly desperate. Just follow through with what you think is good. Who has been with you, even in the darkest and hardest hours. Even when they played the antagonist role, but you brought them out. Trust me. It helps, it really does."

"How do you know?"

"Just trust me. Usually when you love someone, they could make you feel sad. They can even make you feel lonely sometimes. But, that someone can make you happier than you'll ever be. We all wish we could've lived our life without making a mistake, but it's impossible. No matter what happens you make mistakes. Though little by little, one step at a time, we push forwards. Sometimes when you grew up with someone and spent your time with them for your whole life, you tend to make excuses for them. Even for the idiots."

She sighed while looking down at the ground. "Thanks Eric, but I have to go now."

"Okay then. Just remember not to pick a fight over something stupid just because your ego got bruised. Bruised by Hao or Adrien or anyone." He walked away, whispering something softly. "Trust me...so you won't make the same mistake as me."

When Mari got back to the room she sat on her bed while Eric's words rung in her head. She took out her phone seeing that there were no notifications from Adrien. "Why do I still run after him? Why do I care?"

Suddenly her phone rang and it was Adrien. She answered it quickly. "Hello?"

"Hey, I'm surprised that you answered your phone that quickly."

"I was looking at Instagram..."

"Okay then. I ran into Hao at the subway a few days ago and he told me what happened on the night of prom."

"And?"

"I found out that he undressed you and you wanted him to stay. Then you let him kiss you."

"Listen, I was drunk. Of course I say that stuff when I'm drunk, but I have no interest. It really didn't mean a thing to me at all. Is this why you called me?"

"Part of it."

"Okay then. What's the other part?"

"I'm going to stop liking you. Bye." He hung up before she could say a word. Maybe all what Eric was saying was all true and maybe he possibly had experience.
