35. Who Bloody Cares?

The park was nice, Kaito decided. There were few people around to bother them and Tsuki was flying around happily. The magician wasn't sure whether or not it was a good thing that his beloved dove always seemed to come back to him despite the freedom that would come to her if she decided that she wanted it. He didn't want to part with Tsuki, she was his last dove, and the one that he'd bonded with the most. At the same time though, he didn't want to hurt her. Neglecting her was also a form of harming her, wasn't it?

"Tsuki is really well trained, you did a good job with her" Shinichi stated, it was the truth. Letting a pet bird fly outside freely was always risky. Yet there seemed to be no trouble with Tsuki.

Kaito offered a small shrug "I trained her from the moment that she hatched"

The sleuth hummed "Was getting Tsuki intentional or an accident?" From what he'd gathered, all of the magician's doves had been female since he'd seen no separation barriers in the house. Though, did birds breed like cats and dogs did, or was it more rare?

A little thrown off by the random question, it took Kaito a moment to register it "Oh, Tsuki was an accident" At first he'd been upset, but then he'd grown excited "I left some of my dad's doves with a caretaker since I was going on a week long school trip" He grimaced "The caretaker was also caring for someone else's doves and thought it'd be good to let them mingle"

Shinichi frowned "Why couldn't your mom take care of them?"

"She was in Vegas or something I think" Kaito explained "I'd never left them for long, so at the time trusting them to care for themselves sounded horrible" A small smile played on his lips as he watched Tsuki zip through the trees "I obviously never used their pet caring services ever again"

The sleuth nodded "Understandable, having your pets bred without your say in it is terrible" He likely would have gotten his parents to sue the person since mixing people's birds together was a good way to spread illnesses between the flocks. Tsuki suddenly landed on Kaito's shoulder, leaning close to nuzzle his cheek affectionately as she let out soft cooing noises "She loves you a lot, even after you've neglected her so much recently" Shinichi eyed the two "It would be cruel to force her to leave you"

Conflicted, Kaito pursed his lips "Tsuki is so delicate, and she trusts me way too much"

"You're afraid of hurting her" The sleuth breathed. The conclusion wasn't hard to come by.

Kaito nodded "Of course I am" He sighed "Unlike you, she can't defend herself from me" He could faintly taste blood in his mouth "She also doesn't known that she needs to be wary of me"

"I see" Shinichi nodded. That was a fair fear to have except... "You do know that I'm no longer wary of you right?"

"What?" Had Kaito heard right?

Azure softened "You heard me right the first time" He was actually being truthful "I'm not worried about you hurting me anymore, I trust you"

Kaito swallowed, why did that comment make his heart flutter. He should be upset "You really shouldn't trust me Kudo-kun, I'm dangerous"

"I'm also dangerous, I could kill someone easily" Shinichi refuted "I have both the knowledge, and the credibility to get away with it too" He stated, dead serious. He met Kaito's gaze "I don't intend to kill anyone so it's fine, the same goes with you" He offered a small smile "We've been living together for a long time now, how could I not trust you?" It was something that had upset Ai, but that didn't matter much.

"I might not be able to stop myself from harming someone" Kaito sighed, looking away "My body is still changing, and it might affect my mind soon"

Frowning, Shinichi reached over to touch Kaito's jaw "Stop biting your lips"

Red eyes flashed with annoyance "That's what you're worried about?"

Shinichi nodded "Your mind is fine, it's actually healing despite this recent setback" He wiped away the blood from Kaito's chin "You're coping really well considering everything that has happened to you"

Kaito glanced down at the blood on the sleuth's hand "My heart has apparently been replaced by a parasitic gem... My brain is probably next" It was scary. After cooling down, he couldn't deny that the little scientist's findings were scary... actually downright terrifying.

Azure darkened at the information, then quickly regained their light "While that may sound unsettling, it's still functioning as it should right?" Was that why he had withdrawn? Well it was a fair reason, for now.

Blinking, Kaito's brows pinched in thought as he subconsciously placed a hand over his heart. There was a steady beating "I think so? Nothing has really changed and I still bleed?" He didn't feel dead, he felt like he was alive, as he should.

Shinichi smirked "Then it's fine, it's probably just physically replacing your insides but making sure they function the same" He wasn't 100% sure on that, but it was a gamble he was willing to take "Since you're a different species, it's only normal for your insides to change too. That way your body will be more efficient at making sure you're as healthy as possible" He shrugged "Maybe your efficiency in taking in the nutrients in blood will go up once your digestive system is replaced too"

"You're supposed to be the pessimist" Kaito breathed, a bit overwhelmed by the sleuth's optimism.

"Well..." Shinichi looked away "Since you're not really up to the task right now, someone's got to be the optimist between us" He looked at his hand, there was still blood on it. Ai hadn't warned them about Kaito's blood, so it should probably be safe "So you're extra strong, so is Ran" He brought his hand up and licked the blood, it tasted just how he expected, like blood "There are also worse things you could be doing than drinking blood"

Kaito's cheeks warmed at the sight of Shinichi licking the blood from his hand. Fuck.

I hate when my nail bends and then breaks, ihave short nails, like 2-3mm long •^•

Or when they do a weird split there they become layered with a softer bit more painful layer beneath the top one
