37. Greasy Blood

Thankfully, to the sleuth's relief, Kaito didn't really start treating him too differently. Sure Kaito was slightly more touchy than before, but it was more passive touches that happened when two people were near each other. All the touches were innocent and non-sexual too, which was nice since he still needed to sort out how he felt about Kaito.

Kaito was attractive, even with how pale and unhealthy he looked. The red eyes, while strangely unique, were also very striking, especially with how pale Kaito's skin was. From his previous research on the other, he also knew that Kaito had been quite attractive even before his abrupt change in species. After the change, Kaito had kept his physical attractiveness... And thinking about it, Shinichi had to admit that Kaito's mind was quite attractive in itself.

Having a partner that could match him mentally... Shinichi hadn't even considered that to be an option really. He was in the bittersweet situation where he was gifted with high intelligence, but at the same time that intelligence often separated him from those his own age, and even those older. Hattori could match him, but he wasn't interested in the Osakan that way and Hattori liked Kazuha anyways.

Shinichi nibbled on a chicken ball, savouring the grease that saturated the batter. Kaito was eating, and seemed to be enjoying it too with how much he was eating. Seeing the magician all happy and energetic made him smile "Kaito, I think that I might want to try a relationship with you" He couldn't see any downsides that could come from this.

Kaito paused, then finished chewing some rice and swallowed "Are you sure?" He inquired, tilting his head slightly "You haven't even had a full day to think about it" He didn't want the sleuth to rush and then end up regretting it.

Azure softened. Kaito really was a considerate person, even if things didn't work out... For some reason he doubted that it would make things sour between them "Yeah, I think that it's what I want" There wasn't anyone else that came to mind that he could see himself with anyways and Kaito, even as Kid had always caught his attention and made him think.

Red lit up, almost physically glowing as a happy smile spread across Kaito's lips. He'd been expecting to have to court the sleuth for many months first, but here Shinichi was proposing that they should actually enter a relationship "I'll try not to fail as your boyfriend Shinichi" He would do his best not to hurt the other.

Shinichi nodded "And I will do the same" His gaze softened "You matter too" Maybe as Kaito's partner, he'd be better able to help with the other's confidence and self worth problems.

Kaito nodded with only the slightest of hesitation, he had to be worth something if Shinichi was actually willing to date him. The sleuth also wasn't one for pity dates either, it just wasn't his style.

Azure narrowed "By not valuing yourself, that's the same as saying that my taste in partners is terrible" There, that should force Kaito to think twice before devaluing himself. The magician had turned out to be surprisingly thoughtful and less haughty than he'd expected. Though he also had to take into account that Kaito was still emotionally wounded. The things that Kaito had been through, well stuff like that takes time to heal... Even then it might never heal completely. What happened to Kaito was seriously messed up.

"Right" Kaito agreed softly. Some dark and nasty part of him wanted to just completely ignore that logic, but he set that part aside. If he was going to date Shinichi, then he needed to be better and worthy of the sleuth. He'd thought that he'd have more time, but Shinichi's quick acceptance had eliminated any time that he'd thought he'd had. He took a generous sip of blood, dissatisfied with its taste "I'll work on it"

"That's better than nothing I guess" The sleuth sighed, eyes soft. Healing took time and at least Kaito was trying while also making progress. He turned his attention towards Kaito's drink, it was 80% blood and 20% dark chocolate powder mixed with water "What does that taste like to you?" He was curious.

Kaito blinked at the unexpected answer "It tastes like blood and chocolate" He paused, trying to think of a better way to explain it "I guess a better explanation would be if I suddenly get a really bad cut in my mouth after eating chocolate" A small smile tugged at his lips "Just without the pain"

"Huh" Shinichi tilted his head, he wasn't sure what sort of answer he'd been expecting "Does it taste good to you? Or is the taste neutral because you're used to it?"

The magician licked his lips "It tastes disgustingly stale, but it's substance itself is addictive" Despite how bad it tasted, he still craved it since he couldn't get anything better just yet. Hopefully with time, a better concoction could be made.

"Stale" Shinichi repeated "With how fresh that blood is, would adding more human blood to the mix fix that?" They'd been given Kaito untainted blood, but Ai had already confirmed that tainted blood wouldn't harm Kaito. If more blood was needed, they could look into the less than ideal blood donations.

"Nah" Kaito shook his head before nibbling on some greasy steamed broccoli "I'd need to drink straight from the source" He pointed his chopsticks at Shinichi "And that is not something that's safe to do" He ate some cauliflower, it was strange how American Chinese food could make something like steamed vegetables greasy. It tasted good though so he had no complaints.

Azure widened "Oh" He resisted the urge to feel where Kaito had bitten his neck. The sharp pain and fear he'd felt momentarily grasping at him "Yeah, I'm surprised that I didn't get an infection" Deep cut into veins plus all the germs that lived in someone's mouth? Yeah, he was super lucky.

"My spit is now sanitary according to the little scientist" Kaito snorted "I was talking about the danger of sharp fangs slicing into delicate necks.

Me: So Shinichi decided to be proactive, unlike how he was with Ran XP
