JO
At this family dinner – like always – we mostly talked about the future. Kelly lied to my parents about her job and about her studies. And then, my career plans came in the chat. I directly saw my father was the most interested of them, by my project.
- And...what kind of company do you plan to launch, remember me ? he wondered.
- I would like it to be specialized in tourism. Green tourism. Create an eco lodge or simply a structure that will preserve the environment. That is what works the most nowadays. I want to innovate, in a clean way.
- Okay, but that already exists, no ? I mean, hospitality is an old job, nothing new.
- Yes, but that's why I am focusing on green hospitality. Something innovative and helpful.
My mother stays quiet, while my father retorts :
- But that's neither innovative or helpful. It's even kind of...useless.
His last words hit me like no others. Immediately, mom starts to calm the situation :
- What your father is trying to tell you is that there are few chances that your project will work. But maybe we're wrong, and you'll surprise us.
I see Kelly is embarrassed. As embarrassed as me, surely.
- Yes, listen to your mother, launch a company that will fail the first year. No, your unique way to manage a company that will thrive will be to work with me.
- But that's not what I want to do in life. I want to create something by myself.
- Sometimes, we don't have the competences to do it. A lot of people don't have the job they want to do in life, and that's okay. You can't make money and like your job. That's life.
- I disagree.
- Then, you're going to fail.
Mom looks at dad with big angry eyes. I am so fed up with him, I just stand up.
- I'm coming back. I need to pee.
And I wait to close the toilets' door to scream in my hand, so nobody would hear me.
