chapter 19 - one step forward, three steps back

"Y/n, I swear to Merlin if you don't stop banging your head on the table, I will Depulso your ass to the next town over," Imelda snapped.

I whined, pausing my dramatic head banging on my Arithmancy textbook. "I hate this class so much! The numbers make no sense," I said, my voice muffled as I kept my face buried in the opened book, hoping to magically infuse the inked words to my brain.

We were studying in my favourite spot in the library. The pouring autumn rain trailed down the windows, transforming the space into a cozy oasis. It was making me want to sleep.

I was exhausted from Quidditch practice this morning but I needed to use this free period to force myself to study Arithmancy or else I'd be behind.

I also asked Professor Weasley about a possible Halloween dance in a few weeks, which took a lot of convincing, draining me even more. But I felt relief when she agreed so it wasn't all bad.

I was excited but dreaded the whole planning part of the dance.

I was glad the girls had the same free period as me. They kept me sane. Most times.

Natty sighed on the other side of me. "Take a break, my friend. I think it will do you some good."

Poppy chuckled a little, sitting across the table from me. "Agreed. Also, why can't you just ask Sebastian to tutor you?"

That made me straighten up. I looked at the girls with narrowed eyes, their faces studying me intently.

"Why would I do that?" I asked.

"Uh, because he's very good on the subject and he's acing it? I would know, I'm in class with you two!" Natty stated.

I turned to her. "Okay then. Why can't you teach me, Natty?"

She laughed, patting my shoulder. "I'm not the best with Arithmancy either, Y/n. Trust me, you'll want the very best to teach you."

I groaned, complaining in silence.

"I know he's hurt you terribly during your birthday, but don't you think it may be time to talk to him about it?" wondered Poppy, her eyes soft.

I still haven't confessed to them about what happened between me and Sebastian that night at the Astronomy Tower. I haven't told them I've already silently forgiven him either.

Only Ominis knew these things, which was odd to think about. At the same time, he was the only one who could truly understand how I was feeling. Our situation was the same.

"I'm just not ready," I told Poppy. A half-truth.

Imelda shut the DADA textbook she was studying, propping her arm on the table to look at me. "Can I be honest with you, Y/n?"

Rolling my eyes, I said, "Even if I said no, you're going to speak your mind anyway. Go ahead, Imelda."

She didn't hesitate. "Maybe if you sleep with Sebastian you'll finally stop being so goddamn stubborn!"

"Imelda!" The three of us scolded.

Blood violently rushed to my cheeks. A few nearby students were eyeing us with concerned looks.

"What?" Imelda smirked, trying to be innocent. "You can't tell me you haven't noticed these two constantly butting heads and flirting in class with their banter." She told Natty and Poppy.
