chapter 18 - treacherous

"Come on, Morphina. We're late for our sorting ceremony," called Marvolo Gaunt to his sister while looking at me.

Malice marred his piercing eyes that stared right into mine. I kept my head held high, acting like I didn't want to hide myself away.

They were here because of my father. Or Ominis's father. It didn't matter who. I just knew they were here to keep a lookout on us.

On me.

I was almost sure Marvolo saw the moment that passed between me and Sebastian when he bursted through those doors.

"Yes, yes, I'm coming," said Morphina, annoyed.

Her long blonde hair swished behind her as she passed us, eyeing Sebastian, then me with suspicion.

I gulped a little but I didn't break away from her stare, my fury surfacing. But I was still too distracted and flustered thinking about Sebastian touching me a moment ago.

I was too confused to process the Gaunts being here. Questions ran through my head like broken clockwork.

What in all hells just happened between me and Sebastian just now? Such a small moment in time, yet it seems to catalyse the formation of something new and unknown within me.

Something new and unknown... new... and unknown... but was it truly unknown?

This is strange. I don't know what to feel!

It would've been smart to walk away from his treacherous touches, but it was like I was far too swept away...and I liked it. I hated that I liked it—that I liked the way his handprints burned my skin, and the way I craved more with just the lightest tap of his rough fingers.

Surely these feelings were only because I missed him...

As a friend. A best friend. Surely.

The second set of doors to the Great Hall creaked open, severing these conflicting thoughts of mine.

"Ah, there you two are." Headmaster Black's usual condescending voice echoed in the room as he eyed the Gaunts. "Come on then, we have been waiting. You need to be sorted," he hurried.

Marvolo and Morphina shared knowing looks before settling their eyes on me one last time. "See you in there," said Marvolo, smirking like the devil.

The Gaunt siblings walked in, leaving us alone in the room with the headmaster.

Headmaster Black followed after the Gaunts, but paused by the doorway, noticing Sebastian and I weren't moving from our spot. "Mr. Sallow. Miss Gray. What are you two still doing here? Off you go!"

"Yes, professor! Right away," I quickly said.

"Of course, sir. Right away," said Sebastian at the same time.

We followed after the headmaster, hurrying.

I bumped into Sebastian trying to walk through the doors, making me feel even more flustered. We both stumbled back, embarrassed.

I couldn't look at him as I said, "Sorry, sorry. Go ahead. You go first."

"No, you go ahead, Y/n," Sebastian offered, scratching the back of his head. I noticed a slight pink to his cheeks.
