Author's note: I've decided to use the Third POV for this chapter. I just felt like it made more sense. Hope you guys don't mind!

Part 1: depths of the black lake

Thick mist cloaked the grounds on a Saturday afternoon. The snow covering the earth was starting to melt, greens and floras beginning to peek through for the coming spring. But the fog settling on the surface kept the air bitingly cold.

Y/n, Ominis, Imelda, and Sebastian were bundled up in thick sweaters, scarves wrapped around their necks.

Y/n and Sebastian brought Imelda and Ominis with them to keep a lookout for anyone who might come by. Y/n had explained to Imelda yesterday why she needed to speak with Nerida about the mermaids, so she knew everything about their little quest. Since Y/n and Sebastian didn't know what would happen below that lake, they also needed them to ensure they would resurface just fine.

Sebastian was slightly trembling, but not from the cold. But rather from the terrifying feeling of what would happen to his Y/n below the depths. He convinced himself nothing would happen to her. He wouldn't let anything happen to her.

"Remember, the closer I get to the diadem the more it will confuse me. Hypnotize me," Y/n was saying as they made their way down into the boathouse. "I've had more control recently because of my ancient magic, but I can still hear its voice on certain nights. I realized the closer I am to it, the louder the voice gets."

Taking careful steps down the slippery stone stairs, Sebastian said, "Can you hear it right now?"

Y/n's eyebrows scrunched, looking in the distance. "Not yet, but it comes and goes. I never know when it'll let itself be heard." She took a deep breath, then sighed, mist escaping her mouth. "I could probably control my consciousness, but who knows."

"I don't like this, Y/n," let out Imelda.

"None of us like it, Imelda," Ominis inserted. "But it seems crucial that Y/n retrieves it before someone else finds it."

"That begs the question of who might be trying to find it." Sebastian turned his head to Y/n, finding her cheeks flushed from the cold.

Y/n swallowed. Despite the soft, chilly wind whipping past her cheeks, she felt her palms pool with sweat. She hasn't told anyone else about Marvolo threatening her to retrieve the diadem, but she supposed now was the time.

No secrets, she had promised. And promises? They were sacred to her.

"I know who," she confessed. "Marvolo wants it."

The Slytherins paused upon reaching the docks, their unsure footsteps clicking on the mossy stone floor going quiet. They stared at the Ravenclaw, darkened looks on their faces. Especially Sebastian.
