chapter 55 - collision

"Give me Salazar Slytherin's wand, Y/n, and this could all be over," stated Marvolo ever so casually, a usual evil grin on his face.

Y/n frowned, her hand still on the secret pocket of her gear, the one she'd enchanted so only she had access to it.

Her eyes fell on the clock on the wall. If they got the timings right, Ominis and Anne should have found Sebastian by now and were mostly likely on their way out. Y/n simply needed to buy time and distract Marvolo, Edard, and her father Elias.

Edard, her grandfather, took casual steps toward her, hands behind his back as if he controlled the world itself with the mere snap of his fingers.

And perhaps, right now, he did. Y/n needed to tread lightly. Her grandfather may be Ravenclaw, but he can be more cunning than a Slytherin.

"I did strike a deal with Mr. Gaunt, Y/n," Edard announced. "Perhaps, if you fulfill his wish, I can fulfill your wish. How does that sound?"

His words sounded too good to be true, Y/n wasn't going to fall for it. But she can play their game.

And honestly, Y/n almost wanted to laugh at the ridiculousness. An old man making a deal with a nineteen-year-old? Utter bullshit.

But if Y/n were to guess, Marvolo was acting out of his own parents' delusional requests. Ominis had told her again and again that his siblings had always been influenced more harshly in the Dark Arts than he ever was.

"What kind of deal did you make?" Y/n asked her grandfather.

But it was Elias who answered, giving his daughter an inscrutable look. "Stop asking questions, my dear. And just give them the wand."

Y/n's face scrunched in confusion. Something else was going on. Specifically with her father. It was almost like he cared...about something. Whatever it was. She couldn't tell. Because it sure as hell wasn't care for her.

She swallowed, putting her wand out and trying not to let her hand tremble. "If I give you the wand, how do I know you'll keep your word and let Sebastian go?"

Marvolo smirked, leaning against a pillar. "I can keep my word if you can keep yours."

"That's not an answer. And how do I know Sebastian's still alive?"

"He is. That much I can guarantee. He is perfectly safe, locked in the cellar, alone."

Y/n wanted to scoff. Sebastian was anything but safe, and they'd most likely hurt him already. But at least she knew he was alone in there.

"Sister, be careful," Alden warned behind her while sliding a hand on her shoulder, his voice just low enough that only she could hear him.

"I am careful," she murmured under her breath.

She squeezed her pocket, debating whether it was time to play the card.

But the decision was made for her when more dark wizards flew in using apparition, six of them landing in front of her and Alden, making a barrier between them and the three men whose throats she wanted to tear open, despite two of them practically being her family.

Blood meant nothing to her anymore. Blood did not equal family anymore. Not after what they have made her endure. Not after everything.

Heart rapidly pounding against her chest, and sweat trickling down her forehead, Y/n studied the dark wizards who slowly took careful steps toward her.
