chapter 15 - quidditch trials

Quidditch tryouts were today. I'd spent the morning before classes doing some flying warm-ups.

I've been sleeping less lately, waking up in the middle of the night because of some nonsense nightmare I try to ignore. I would feel my ancient magic sparking from stress, but at least it has been easier to control lately. I've been practicing control in the Room of Requirement by myself when I've got free time, which has been a big help.

I dreaded walking into that field, and not because of the nerves, but because Slytherins had just finished their tryouts, meaning Sebastian was going to be there.

I got here early on purpose because I wanted to take my time walking to the Quidditch pitch, hoping the nerves would dissipate by the time I stepped foot in there. But it didn't work because I was still full of nerves at the thought of seeing him there.

Sure enough, as I walked through the entrance under the bleachers, there he was. Standing there in his Slytherin Quidditch uniform, a broom in hand and looking so...

I shook my head and lightly pinched my arm. I had no reason to be noticing how he looked in sweaty Quidditch uniform.

I adjusted my blue uniform at the neck area, suddenly anxious. I rushed to my housemates and hid myself in the Ravenclaw crowd, hoping he wouldn't see me.

I couldn't handle looking him in the eyes after what I said to him in the Astronomy Tower two days ago. I could barely handle being in the same room as him.

Advanced Potions had been especially horrible. The heat from the cauldrons, on top of the anxiety flowing through my veins? I could've fainted.

"Y/n! You made it!" Everett called to me, waving at me as I fast walked over to them, my broom clutched in my hand.

I saluted him in good nature. "Hello there, team captain," I said, smiling brightly. Despite everything that has happened the past few weeks, it felt great to be here.

"You're late, Y/n." Samantha glared at me.

I squinted my eyes at her, confused. "Trials don't start for another five minutes. Ever read a clock before? Simple mathematics, Samantha."

"Okay!" Everett interrupted, knowing us well enough that we liked to argue in class and in the common room. "So, here's how this will work. Slytherins are finishing up, so let me take this time now to break it all down. First, everyone please stand in a line, and let me know what position you're trying out for."

Everett pulled out an enchanted parchment, letting it float in the air along with a quill that wrote on his command.

Samantha went ahead of me, hearing her say Seeker. I almost scoffed. I've seen her fly and she was impressive, but not that impressive.

When it was my turn, I told Everett I wanted to try out for Chaser.

"Are you sure? Why not Seeker, Y/n?" he asked, confused.

"I don't know, I'm not sure Seeker is right for me," I said, shrugging.

"I've seen you fly! Didn't you also beat Imelda as the school's fastest flyer last year?" he insisted.

"I did! But it was luck, Everett. I haven't been flying that long. Seeker would be too demanding."

He sighed, defeated, and put my name down for Chaser.
