chapter 40 - a golden time

The weekend weather was beautiful today so I decided to do some light reading outside in the Transfiguration Courtyard. A few students lounged in the area, clad in their spring casual clothes and warm smiles. I bundled up in a thin black coat with my Ravenclaw scarf, and some skirt and leggings underneath.

Most students were visiting the village for Hogsmeade weekend, so the castle was quieter than usual.

I needed some time to myself without the bustling crowd, so here I was, sitting alone on the fountain and reading some rather interesting novel that others would probably judge me for. But they were so much fun to read, so did I really care? Not really. I've had to bite my lip a few times to keep from laughing and blushing too hard because my favourite characters just got together and did things in the bedroom.

But good things and peace only lasted so long, didn't they? Because my lovely owl flapped over to me.

Closing my rather not-so-innocent book and tucking it into my bag, I took the letter from Tikki who perched beside me.

I was not surprised that the letter came from my father. To be honest, I was more exhausted than sad these days reading his owls.

Letting out a tired sigh, I opened it and read:

Y/n,

Make use of Hogsmeade Week to spend time with Mr. Gaunt.

Times are fast approaching.

Get to know him.

E.G.

Rolling my eyes, I crumpled the piece of paper, took out my wand, and burned it to ashes. It was routine by now with every owl I received from him.

"Thanks, Tikki. Sorry, you have to deliver such nonsense." I patted my snowy owl and let her fly off into the open sky—something I wished I could do.

Hiding behind invisible cages took a lot of life out of me. But I did my best to be more optimistic these days, because if I didn't, what good would that do?

Although Sebastian pestered me about my odd behaviours, he's learned to leave it alone these days.

With one last look at the golden blue sky above, I stood up from the fountain and made my way back inside. I guessed I couldn't avoid Hogsmeade Week after all and need to go to the village anyway.

Ominis was usually in the Great Hall at this hour, so I made my way there first. I let out a sigh of relief when I saw him sitting in the Slytherin table, lost in his own world as he studied a book using his wand to scan the pages. I didn't exactly have the energy to run around the castle looking for my future fiancé today.

"Ominis! There you are," I greeted as I made my way over.

"Y/n," he smiled softly, closing the book, "to what do I owe this pleasure?"

"I've come bearing news, unfortunately."

His mood suddenly turned sour, and I honestly couldn't blame him. "What is it now?"

I planted my palms on the table and said, "Oh you know...my dear, lovely father has asked I spend time with you at Hogsmeade."

Ominis merely groaned before he stood up from the Slytherin table and we made our way to Hogsmeade. He already understood what that meant.
