chapter 45 - labyrinth

We left Hogwarts this morning and spent the rest of the time preparing for our quest until the moon appeared.

The Southern-East wind howled outside the windows of Sallow Manor as we strapped ourselves in our battle gear. Upon looking at the grandfather clock by the fireplace of the living room, I made a mental note that it was fifteen minutes before the ninth hour of the evening. We were going to use the darkness as cover in sneaking around the gates of Gaunt Manor.

I slung my small pouch over my head, crossing it over my body until it landed on my right hip.

"So," I began, "we've got tonight and tomorrow to retrieve that wand. We should be fine as long as we get back to Hogwarts before Monday. Should be enough time, right?"

Sebastian, Anne and Ominis gave me uncertain looks.

I blinked. "What?"

"Last time you said you had enough time, you didn't have enough time," said Ominis. "You almost drowned."

Sebastian's gaze darkened at the memory. "Let's not jinx it this time, please."

I shrugged, tightening the straps of my black gloves that covered my palm but kept my fingers exposed.

"Sorry," I mumbled.

"Don't forget these," said Anne, handing me a pouch with a string, potion vials of all kinds clinking inside. Even the extra special one I made.

I smiled and took it from her. "Thanks, Anne." She gave potion pouches to Ominis and Sebastian too.

Anne stopped right in front of Ominis and helped him with his cuffs, his gear all in black. I couldn't help but find their interaction cute, smiling to myself.

I finished putting on the last of my gear, my wand strapped to my side. I double-checked the potions in my pouch, then tightened the protective leather around my waist and palms. I'd also braided my hair back as usual.

I strolled over to Sebastian and helped him with his vest, buttoning it for him out of instinct.

"Thanks," he mumbled, a soft grin on his face.

"You're welcome," I said softly, stepping back.

I admired him for a moment, the amber light from the hearth flickering over his features. He wore blue gear with a brown and white vest, swirling designs overtop. His forearm was cuffed in the same kind of leather, with a belt around his waist, and pants that were a darker shade of blue.
