chapter 28 - walls of insincerity

Autumn air...

Pine...

Books...

Chocolate...

These things followed me everywhere for the past two weeks and a half. And more so now than ever since brewing that love potion.

Ominis has been pestering me to tell Sebastian about his sister's whereabouts, and I was freaking the hell out. I mean, who wouldn't? The last time I held such a secret from Sebastian, I ended up fighting with him for a whole month.

And it really did hurt how he called me ignorant once.

He was my best friend and I was scared of telling him.

"Why me, Ominis?" I had asked one Monday evening.

"I recall you were always good with your words, Y/n. Remember last year? You always told us what we needed to hear." Ominis explained.

I huffed, pouting. "That was last year! And Sebastian gave me shit for it."

"You'll be fine," he smirked, walking away. "I'm off to bed. Tell him sometime this week."

I stopped him. "Wait! Why can't you do it with me? You're practically feeding me to the wolves!"

Ominis had just laughed at me and left me to my turbulent thoughts.

The first time I attempted telling Sebastian about Anne, I found him trudging across the snow in the Viaduct Courtyard, wearing his black sweater and Slytherin scarf, hands tucked in his pockets. He caught my stare and I froze, while he kept smiling at me.

"Enjoying the view?" he flirted, strolling over to me.

I heated up, knowing he did that on purpose to get under my skin. Although I was blushing, I pretended to look around curiously. "The view? Where?"

"Ouch." He shook his head and laughed. "Come on, we'll be late for dinner."

"Sebastian, hold on!" I halted him from leaving, my heart racing as I took the opportunity for honesty while no one else was around. "I need to tell you something."

His eyebrows scrunched in question, waiting for me to answer.

I swallowed, hesitating. "I-it's about...uh... well," I breathed out, "try not to get angry but it's—"

The double doors opened behind me. I turned around and found Marvolo strolling over, his usual cold stare pointed at me and Sebastian.

How does he even manage to find me? Almost all the time now too. It was annoying!

"Everything alright here?" Marvolo grumbled.

Sebastian glared at me, and I did the same.

He passed me without a second glance, putting on a facade that we hated each other again.

But I couldn't help but notice how he smelled like fresh autumn air, breezing past me like a lone leaf in the wind...

Just like how his fingers threaded on my hair, sweeping it across my shoulders that one night in the Potions classroom.

There it was. Autumn air.
