chapter 46 - beneath the crypts


It wasn't the freefall that had my heart dropping to my stomach. Because for him I would have done it anyway. But it was how he held my gaze with unyielding intensity, following me into a possible death as if it was better than staying up there without me.


My braided hair was coming undone, strands waving past my face in goodbye. I felt like I was coming undone too, not even knowing what awaited us as my body fell, back towards the ground.


His hand reached out to me like he was desperate for a lifeline. And so did I, closing my eyes with a few tears escaping me, floating up in the air.


When his fingers finally grazed mine, it was like taking the first breath of fresh air even in the midst of darkness swallowing us whole.


He gripped my hand tighter, pulling me closer until my whole body was flushed against his. Cradling my head with the palm of his hand, he twisted us around in the air so he was below and I was on top as if he wanted to cushion my fall.


"Sebastian..." His name came out like a whisper of a wish from my lips.


He answered by embracing me tighter and burying his face on my shoulder. His lips pressed on my skin as if to seal our unspoken truths.


The fall had felt like an eternity.


We fell...


And fell...


And fell...


Gravity pulled us down into the abyss.


Perhaps it was for a few seconds. Or perhaps it was an hour or a day, or only a few minutes. I could not tell time. What once used to stand still between us was taking its sweet time to let us meet fate.


I opened one eye, noticing a blue glow peeking through and radiating off the ground. I shut my eyes tighter, tucking myself closer to Sebastian, as the ground kept getting closer...and closer... and—
