song: Castles Crumbling —
"Never wanted you to hate me."
(I recommend listening to the song halfway through the chapter or after)
chapter 14 - meeting at the tower
Sebastian's Perspective
The sun had set an hour ago, but it was still a few minutes until the clock would strike eight. I've watched the day transform into a jewelled sky, not wanting to waste a second of opportunity waiting for her.
She had a habit of getting somewhere early. If not early, then she always arrived on time. And there wasn't a curfew yet, so she shouldn't have much difficulty coming here if she wanted to.
I wanted to get here before eight, just in case she was early. Still, I was almost convinced it was only wishful thinking she would step foot through those stairs and meet me up here.
I clasped my hands together, propping my arms on the railing of the Astronomy Tower, telescopes lining the space around me, the big one to my left.
My eyes landed on the Quidditch field in the distance and I couldn't help but think about the upcoming tryouts. I was almost certain Y/n was going to try out too, considering Professor Weasley urged us it would make our credits look better at the end of the year. That would mean I'd need to compete against her too. The idea of it thrilled me.
I shivered as a gust of autumn air whipped past, breaking through my black sweater and coat. I wasn't sure why she liked it up here so much. She hated the cold. But I guess the view made up for it. The hills and mountains, the stars sprinkled along the surface of the small bit of the Black Lake visible from here, weaving through the lands...I could see why she admired it up here.
"What do you think is beyond?" she asked me, one night when we snuck out in the middle of the night before OWLs.
She was the one who convinced me, needing to alleviate her anxiety about the upcoming exams.
"What do you mean?" I asked. She spoke in riddles sometimes.
"I mean, what do you think is beyond those mountains? If you took your broom, and just kept flying, where do you think you'd end up?"
"I don't know," I shrugged, looking out over the view. "Paris?" I never paid much attention to the Muggle study of geography.
"I wouldn't complain. And you're most likely wrong," she laughed, "and sure there are the Highlands...and Feldcroft of course...but I wonder what we would discover on the way, you know?"
I turned to her and found her watching the view, eyes sparkling with curiosity.
And something about the way she said "we" made my heart flutter.
"Perhaps one day we can discover things together. And I'm not talking about the kind we did this year. I want to discover good things for once." I leaned a little closer though she wasn't looking, then half-whispered. "Let's finish our exams first, hm?" I winked.
