chapter 44 - jealousy, jealousy

Sebastian, Ominis and I were in my grassland vivarium by the castle ruins, my magical beasts prancing about as the lone phoenix soared the clouds.

Sebastian had somehow managed to sneak me out of their common room undetected this morning. The Slytherin robe he gave me to use as a disguise was somewhere on a couch in the Room of Requirement.

Although I didn't get a full sleep, I would admit that sleeping in Sebastian's bed seemed to have given me the best sleep I've had in a while.

I wonder if I could sneak in again, I thought. Then cursed myself for the illogical and reckless thought.

I was pacing across the ground, each stone and pebble making crunching noise under my shoes. I was biting my nails from the anxiety flowing through me. Sebastian had gone quiet, sitting on the castle ruin steps.

"Tell me again, Ominis," I demanded, still in denial about the news he told us.

He sighed. "Marvolo wants to find Salazar Slytherin's wand."

He tried to tell us this morning but Sebastian and I were "quite" preoccupied in his dormitory.

"And w-why is that?" I stopped pacing, looking at Ominis. "How do you know?"

"He told me, Y/n. Literally. Morphina did too," he explained, pinching the bridge of his nose. "It was another one of their attempts to get me to side with my family and the Dark Arts."

I felt a lump in my throat all of a sudden. I hadn't told Ominis I forced Sebastian to teach me the Unforgivable Curses, finally letting myself dabble in the Dark Arts. I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell him either because it wouldn't benefit him.

I scoffed. "And he thinks finding Salazar Slytherin's wand will make you side with him? Is he mad?"

"Mad is an understatement for that psychopath," Sebastian mumbled.

"What could he possibly want with the wand, Ominis?" I threw my arms in the air and began pacing once more.

"I don't know," he answered low. "But he did tell me it will be an asset for when I marry you."

"If you marry her," Sebastian butted in.

I rolled my eyes at his useless jealousy. He should know better by now that he has all of me and nothing was going to take that away.

"Not now, Sebastian," said Ominis, clearly annoyed at his tone.

Sebastian leaned back on his elbows, eyes burning into mine as he asked, "What does the wand even have to do with your..." he trailed off, jaw tensing as he tried to find the right word, "arrangement?"

Ah, so now he couldn't even say the word marriage with Ominis in the room anymore. His possessiveness could burn forests right now and I had no idea where it was coming from. Perhaps from our sneak-out session in his dormitory this morning?

Ominis ignored the tension radiating off Sebastian and continued, "He didn't tell me anything else. All I know is that my brother is power-hungry. That is all there is to him, and that is all that was taught to him growing up. He thinks anyone without a Pure Blood status must be eradicated from this world."

My heart dropped at the pit of my stomach at Ominis's words. It has never been a surprise that the Gaunts were cruel when it came to blood status, but the fact that Marvolo was seeking such a powerful wand made me scared for this world. But why now? Why look for it now?
