Part 2: depths of the black lake
Silver light barely illuminated the gloom in front of them, the silence of the water defeaning against their racing pulse. Their wands—lone twin stars existing to fight the void surrounding them.
They had one hour left.
Y/n took a sharp intake of breath, scanning the walls with her lit-up wand, then pointing it down. It was completely empty, except for the moss and slimy, green threads on the gray stone. And the cave wasn't a straight line at all... it went deeper, a path into hellscape itself.
"Have you got the potions?" Sebastian asked, wanting to check.
Y/n checked her stash wrapped around her waist, the vials still secured. She even brought the wiggenweld infused with the dragon's blood from Professor Sharp.
"Still secured," she said.
"Then, let's go," Sebastian tried to keep his confidence in check, his feet kicking against the water. Y/n followed right next to him.
There was nothing yet as far as their eyes could see, but at least they had each other.
Down...
Down...
And down they went...
Darkness devoured everything as they dove into the abyss.
They kept their wands out, caution and alertness a priority in their whirring minds. Y/n panted, nerves wracking every line in her body, heart beating against her chest. Sebastian tried to keep his wand steady even as he felt the exact same way.
Forty-five minutes.
Y/n grunted, her arms working twice as hard now to fight against the current. "I hate this," she drawled, muscles aching.
"Maybe we should've found another spell to help us with the current. Polyjuiced ourselves into a goldfish...or squid," Sebastian joked.
"Right. Imagine polyjuicing yourself into a meal," she snickered.
If they were above water, they'd be sure to be sweating by now.
Still, they kept going...
Down...
Down...
Forty minutes.
Muscles aching, fingertips pruning, and Sebastian keeping light of the situation by telling horrible water puns.
"Hey, I've got another one," Sebastian began.
"Sebastian..." she sighed, tired of it but intrigued all at once.
"Why was the goldfish always on time?"
Without turning her head to face him, she said, "Why?"
"It liked to stay current."
"You are ridiculous," she laughed, Sebastian giving her a grin. Y/n tampered down the temptation to Expulso his ass. He was lucky he was charming.
