"When everyone tells us what we can be, how can we rewrite the stars?"

chapter 50 - rewrite the stars

A mirage of images was flashing in the back of my mind as I tried my best to study for exams inside the library. Dreamscapes I wished I could hold on to.

I'd woken up this morning with tear-stained cheeks, but it wasn't the kind that gave you a heavy heart. It was the kind that gave me hope.

It was a good dream. Too good of a dream. One where I was living a free life with Sebastian Sallow. One where we lived free from rules that snuffed out the stars in our eyes. And I wished nothing more than to suddenly run away somewhere only we knew.

Looking at our situation right now though, it was impossible. Too dangerous. And I couldn't help but feel like maybe it was my fault for putting us through this.

I told Ominis a day before Valentine's Day that I wanted to speak to my family about our marriage alliance. But he managed to convince me a few days later that it wasn't the best idea yet because I'd only be putting Sebastian in danger. My family would want to bargain for something else in exchange, and so would the Gaunts. And seeing as how the Gaunts already knew about my ancient magic, my guess was they'd want to use it against me for defying their rules.

"Y/n? What are you thinking?" Natty asked beside me.

I faked a smile trying to get rid of the images in my head, then gave a dramatic sigh. "Exams, Natty. That's what I'm thinking about." She gave me a small laugh.

On my other side, Poppy groaned. "Tell me about it! I don't think I'm ready!"

"Exams are in a few days and I think my brain has been fried for at least a month now. Save yourselves girls, I can't do this anymore," complained Imelda, burying her face on an Ancient Runes book.

Beside Imelda, Anne chuckled a little and said, "I'm glad to be back at Hogwarts. Truly. But I do miss studying at home. This is stressful!"

Cheering suddenly sounded from behind us which made us twist around in our seats. A Gryffindor and a Slytherin boy kissed each other while students around them cheered, the Slytherin boy holding a sign. Madam Scribner was quick to shush the applause but not nearly quick enough to kill the fire in their eyes.

Poppy gave a long sigh beside me. "Well, there goes another proposal for the dance."

"Oh, Poppy," I chuckled, "why don't you ask Emilia to the dance? From Gryffindor too, no? She fancies you. The dance is next week after exams!"

"Yes, but I'm shy Y/n," she groaned. "Maybe tomorrow...But also...I can't choose between her or Luke from our house!"

Imelda and Natty jumped in to give Poppy advice right after that, but their voices were muffled as my own mind began whirring with thoughts again.

I bit my lip slightly, jealousy within me spiking at how easily it was for everyone else to show their love and affection for each other.

I wasn't expecting a dance proposal at all. Of course, I'd technically already said yes to Sebastian, but I couldn't help but yearn to have that freedom of asking each other publicly to the dance.

Anne turned to Imelda and asked, "Who are you going with?"

Imelda suddenly blushed. "Amit asked me yesterday actually. I said yes."
