chapter 60 - illusion

Sebastian Sallow

Sebastian, Anne, Ominis, and Alexander peeked through the curtains of the black carriage that took them to the gates of Gaunt Manor.

They sat in silence for a few moments upon the carriage halting to a stop, watching powerful names swish and sway their hips to the front doors, handing out their proof of invitation.

They watched through their enchanted masks as masquerade attendees, all clad in black extravagant clothing and elegant masks, entered the manor in pairs or groups.

"This feels more like a funeral than a wedding," Anne complained, adjusting the top of her corset, grumbling in annoyance.

"It might as well be. Rich assholes, this lot," Sebastian muttered.

Alex smirked, arrogance oozing from his stance. "You know you're a rich asshole too, right Sallow?"

Sebastian glared at Alex, ignoring the remark. "I thought you said this was a small, secret gathering."

"This is small," Alex muttered rather gruffly, "only Pure-Blooded families are here."

Anne rolled her eyes. "And how many families are there in attendance?"

"Twenty-seven. So," he breathed, then exhaled hard, "all of them. Almost. The Weasleys didn't attend. I think we all know why."

"Good for them. Wouldn't expect anything less from Garreth's family." Ominis frowned, a curious look on his face. "But the rest...I know of them all. The Malfoys, Blacks, Carrows, Longbottoms, to name a few. Some of these families don't believe in blood supremacy, so why would they be here?"

Ominis's family didn't send him an invitation just because he was already a Gaunt and he could have come in if he wanted to. But he was sure his family never expected him to come knowing his dislike of them.

Sebastian kept watching the outside party, his hands sweating from anxiety. He said, "I don't think they know what they're here for. Or at least, they don't know who it is for."

"No, they don't," Alex confirmed. "They know it's a ball for after the wedding but they don't know who the bride is. Marvolo plans to show Y/n off for the mere purpose of showing off his own power. To intimidate the other families."

Sebastian fisted his hands on his knees. "We better hurry, then."

Sebastian was the first to exit the carriage, holding the door open for the others. He kept a casual facade, acting like he belonged here.

And he did look like he belonged if only one didn't look beyond his debonair tux and elegant black mask, which he paired with a confident stance as he began walking to the front doors that held his Y/n captive.

They needed to play it smart, or else, they'd be caught sneaking inside. With so many families in attendance, and most of their members being here, it was easy to get in.

But enchanted masks could only hide so many things, and Sebastian was sure that getting out would be the problem.

The previous night

"You saw Y/n? Are you sure?" Anne's face twisted with incredulity.

"I promise I did," Sebastian insisted. "It was her, Anne. No doubt it, you have to believe me."
