chapter 66 - invisible hourglass

Did you know that feeling when you're so overwhelmed with your own emotions that instead of dealing with them, all you wanted to do was distract yourself from them?

That was exactly me. The reason why I was at Quidditch practice when I knew damn well my head was a mirage of voices and thoughts echoing in a screech that dared turn my mind into mush. But muting my head was a talent of mine I'd learned long ago.

I can do this.

I stood in the field with the rest of my Ravenclaw teammates, some of whom were new to the team, like Andrew Larson. The other half of the field was occupied by the Slytherin team, who were practicing at the same time as us.

Everett and Imelda, both team captains, agreed on sharing the field today. How that agreement came about, I had no idea.

Sebastian Sallow was looking as handsome as ever in his Quidditch uniform, and I'd bet anything he'd look even more handsome when he starts becoming a sweaty mess while wearing a cocky grin. He was making it very hard not to turn around and just stare at him all day.

Unlike the others, I didn't actually need to redo the trial to make the team, which saved me the trouble since I actually missed out on it. That was my fault for starting school late. But hey, trauma can excuse you from a lot of things.

I kept my Chaser position, but I did agree that I would switch to Seeker when needed. Constance was more than happy to agree with it.

"Alright, Ravenclaws! Gather around, if you please," Everett Clopton announced.

I rocked back and forth on my heels, trying not to show that I was becoming anxious inside. I'd accepted an offer from our team captain just yesterday.

With a bright smile on his face, Everett looked at the gathered Ravenclaws and said, "I would like to introduce you to our new captain. Y/n Gray!"

"Uh, co-captain," I corrected Everett, chuckling as I stepped forward beside him. "Thank you, Everett, for giving me this opportunity."

Everyone clapped, with Constance cheering louder than everyone else. Samantha merely crossed her arms and pouted, glaring at me.

Time would tell if accepting a co-captain position was a good idea or not, considering how much of a mess I still was inside my head. But I really needed the distraction.

Ignoring her, I took a deep breath and grinned at everyone. "I'm looking forward to being the very best of guides to you lot." I tried not to giggle, realizing Sebastian said those exact same words to me in fifth year when he had to guide me at Hogsmeade. "For most of us, this is our last year to make the games count. So, give it your all. Put aside your differences and help each other." I narrowed my eyes at Samantha, which had her rolling her eyes. "And Everett and I will do everything in our power to keep you all on top of the game. Yes?"
