Evangeline

I ended up on the floor, fighting for my life in my blanket. It had wrapped itself around me and the more I struggled to pull away from it, the tighter it got.
"fuck" I screeched, finally freeing myself after what felt like an eternity.
I stood up, taking a second to regain my balance. It was pitch black and all I could see was the dim glow of my phone which was somehow half way across my room.

The shouting returned, scaring the life out of me once again.

Nobody else was here except me and Nathan. I had watched them all clear out yesterday and they hadn't returned since, much to my own relief.
But that meant the shouts were from him.

I slowly open my door.
His voice only became clearer as I made my way down the hallway towards his room.
He was calling out for Tommy. Like he was screaming for him at this point, almost begging.

I hesitated at his door. He'd told me on multiple occasions never to open it under no circumstance but I can't just ignore this, even if I wanted to.
What if someone was hurting him?

I take a deep breath before finally pushing the door open.
He tossed and turned right in front of me, tugging desperately at his sheets.
I tiptoe my way over to him, trying not to be too loud. The last thing I wanted to do right now was scare him even more.

"Nathan" I gently shake his shoulder. His skin was hot to the touch.
"Nathan" I whispered

He turned over, pulling a gun on me.
I instantly jumped back, now also completely freaked out.

It took him a second but he lowered it as soon as he realised who I was.
"Evie you scared the shit out of me" he sighed whilst running his hands down his face.

"I scared you?" I blink,

He didn't say anything as he sat himself up. It was at this moment we both realised we were only in underwear.
Well I had a small top on but it wasn't covering much. He instantly pulled the blankets back over himself and I yanked at my top, trying to cover as much as I could with it.

I could feel his eyes trace me as I awkwardly stood there.
"are you okay?" I finally ask

"i'm fine" his tone was sharp.

"you did not sound fine, I thought someone was trying to murder you" I mutter

"well i'm still alive, it was just a nightmare" he snapped.

"about Tommy?" I narrow my eyes at him.
His whole demeanour changed at my remark.

"what?" he looked at me confused and almost upset.

"you were calling for him" I take a step towards him, "is he okay?"

He wasn't even looking at me at this point he was looking past me.
"Nathan?"
His eyes glanced back at me, meeting my own.
He gave me that look.

"he's dead isn't he?" My heart drops as the words left my own mouth.

He swallowed and turned away again, answering my question.

I didn't know Tomas very well at all, but anytime we'd interacted he'd been nothing but nice. I wasn't able to say that about many people around here.

I slowly walked towards him, crouching down to the floor beside his bed.
"who?" I asked quietly

"I don't know yet" his words were dry, "my dad said he'd look into it but I haven't heard anything from him since this morning"

"was it-"I hesitated but he'd already read my mind.
"it was instant"

At least he didn't suffer. I can imagine there's no worse way to go out.

"are the others okay?... physically that is" I started pulling at my necklace, wrapping the chain tightly around my fingers.

"Christian was hurt but he'll be alright"

"that's good then" I whisper

His eyes watched me intently but I tried to ignore him. I knew mentioning it would only start something and for once we seemed to be having a civil conversation.

"you're going to break that Evie" he muttered and pulled my hands away.

"I can't help it" I shake my head.

He held a tight grip on my hands as I looked up at him.
"you're cold" he hummed as another expression crossed his face.

"your window is open" I tilt my head back towards the open window. The curtains moved softly as the breeze entered the room.
"what else is bothering you Nathan?"

His usual glare formed on his face.

"nothing else is bothering me Evangeline" he sighed, yet again.

"I don't believe you" I rolled my eyes at him

"don't do that" he pulled me up so our faces were inches apart, "you know I fucking hate when you do that"

"do what?" I breath, intimidated at how close we suddenly were.

"you know exactly what your doing sunshine" a smirk rose on his lips.
It honestly made me feel something I didn't want to feel around him.

"tell me the truth Nathaniel" I whisper

"it doesn't concern you," his tone was sour as his grip loosened on me slightly.
He held eye contact with me, glaring right into me.
It would be so easy for me to get lost just staring at him. His eyes were the prettiest eyes I had ever seen. He was able to say so much with them without uttering an actual word.

"I am your wife, whether either of us are happy about it, every breath you take concerns me"

The gleam in his eyes only grew darker at my words. His tongue ran around his mouth as he flashed his incredibly straight teeth.

"so tell me the fucking truth"
He sighed and turned away from me.

"Nathaniel tell me"
I stood up which allowed me to look at him closer. He turned back around to my sudden movement, looking at me confused.

"you don't need to worry about it" he whispered, his voice almost soft.

"but I will now" I said, "for some God forsaken reason, I worry about you... you are literally all I have here"

His eyes widened at my words. He almost seemed taken back. I, too, was also a little taken back. I hadn't expected myself to actually openly admit that to him out loud.

"you don't need to worry about me" his hands found my waist and slowly pulled me down beside him.
The tingling sensation it gave me ran throughout my whole body.
"just because I worry about you doesn't mean I like you though"

He laughed quietly, "I know"

He looked down and mumbled something under his breath, it wasn't in english so I had no fucking clue what he said.
He cleared his throat before his eyes once again caught mine.
"they weren't aiming for Christian and Tomas, they were aiming for me and Xander"

His words had me instantly feeling sick.

"the kids, because that's all they were" he shook his head in disapproval, "...they were stupid and inexperienced, they missed"

He could clearly see the expression on my face.
"but my dads looking into it, he seems to know more about it than I do"

He tucked my hair behind my ear.
"don't look so scared Evangeline"

"they wanted to kill you both?"  I started pulling at my necklace once more.

"I imagine that was their plan" he replied, "it seemed like it had something to do with my dad, he knows what to do, he'll sort whatever it is out"

I nodded, acknowledging his words

"you don't need to worry" he repeated, "I promise you that"
