CADEN

I walk back to the house with a smile on my face after seeing Navina.  I notice the black SUV in the driveway and immediately my smile turns into a frown as I walk up the driveway. I try to be silent as I walk in.

I walk past the tall mirror heading for the stairs that right close to the living room area. I peak in seeing the big T.V propped on the wall playing some sort of action movie, "the beast" as people like to call him lays on the couch on the side of the wall, an empty beer in hand. He is good at hiding what he does to me and to others. He hides in smiles and suits and that smile he has been perfecting since the day i met him.

I go directly to my room and lock it with the lock I bought and I put my chair under the doorknob to block it, extra safety just in case. Sighing harshly I run my hands over my face and sit on the mattress that lays on the carpeted ground. I look around like I haven't seen my room in so long. My old desk is right next to the window. The closet is right in front of me closed and a black sweater hanging on the knob. Beside the closet doors I put some sketches I drew with charcoal.

I change into sweatpants and a hoodie and I go on my phone. I can't believe Jesper didn't tell me he was coming here. At first I almost freaked because of River. River ruined his parents relastionship, all because i was friends with Jesper. But I soppose it was a good thing, Jesper's dad was found guilty of grooming kids, he didn't go to jail but he is far away now.

But now Jesper and his mom are alone and they had to move to a 'lesser' neighbourhood as people call them, back in Boston. But she did get a better job and is in the air alot, traveling to who knows where for her work.

ME: Why didn't you tell me about coming here?

JESPER: idk it was fast and unprepared. But your girl!!!! You were right shes hot.

ME: Shut the hell up. To you she's nothing.

JESPER: whatever mister territorial. But she seems sweet. She is not like your cocky ex is she?

I almost chuckle. Why must everyone decide to call me a nickname?

ME: not at all thankfully. She's different I guess.

JESPER: And pretty and stylish and oh just so dreamy!

ME: stop being such a dork you prick.

JESPER: Yes, your highness.

That was followed by a bunch of emoji's. I sigh and roll my eyes, even though he can't see me. It's the thought that counts.

ME: I told you to stop saying that.

JESPER: And when do I listen to you? Anyway, how's River?

ME: Same old River.

JESPER: Well, if you need a place to crash, come here.

ME: Sure.

JESPER: I'm serious Caden.

ME: I know.

How did this conversation go from happy to sad in a split second? I don't necessarily like it... at all. I hear a loud bang coming from downstairs and I flinch back and my eyes widen and my stomach drops.

Shit.

I hear River's heavy footsteps on the steps, the wood creaking with every movement. My heart races faster as I listen. Fuck i hate this. My stomach churns and I gulp as I start to cower in the corner hoping he won't knock. I hear his last step and my eyes stay planted on the wood door.

"Caden?" I hear his deep, grading voice and I immediately freeze. "Are you here?" He speaks again. I stay silent as I hear his footsteps stop. "I just want to know if you're home, you idiot." I feel the stupidity of his tone, like I'm the crazy one.
