Last night...
xI sneak back into the house, through the back door. I see River sound asleep, probably blacked out from the alcohol and I slowly and carefully light a match and put it in the fire. I then carefully and with cloth wrapped on my hands pick up the liquor from River's hand and sprinkle it on the fire and around the house, before putting the liquor bottle back in his hand.
I watch as the flames circle the house. Freedom beckons me. Awakening me. I'm free. I'm finally free. Free from Rory free from river, free from that house, this house, everything. I watch the flames pick up and go around the river chair. He's yours but he's so sound asleep that he doesn't wake up. That is until the flame reaches his leg. The burning made him scream. The hurdle sound of his scream makes me come alive again. It's nice.
He's the one in pain now. After all these years of taunting me. Of making him seem like the hero who saved me from Rory. And maybe he did. But that doesn't change anything. I watch as the flames go up and he finally awakens. That's my cue...
"So you killed him?" Navina asks with a slight furrow in her brow. She paces the bedroom of her floor and waits for my non-existent answer. "You did. Okay. okay. well at least you covered it up... just don't make this killing thing... well a thing." she shrugged and came closer to me. The mattress dips a little against her weight as she sits. Her green doe eyes look into mine and her hand furls into mine as well. Softly she brings my hand closer to her lap as she sighs. 'Are you okay?" she asks. Her voice whispered.
I nod.
She tilts her head. "Be serious Caden. Are you okay? Because you got River out of prison and now you just... Well, fire and boom." she says making an exploding sound.
I no d again. Meaning it. "I am," I say surely. "I'm free from Navina. He told me he saved, me...from Rory. From my father, from my mother... he told me that he was the only one there for me and he was the one who created me." I say my brows furrowing. "He's sick. Sick in the head. And deranged and-" I stop myself and sigh. "He's gone. Finally gone. I'm okay." I say nodding. "Hey, hon? Caden?" I hear Navina's mom from the doorway.
She opens it and her dad's face comes into view as well. Our hands separate and I clear my throat. I don't speak. "Ya?'' Navina wonders.
"Well, River's lawyer is here... he needs to talk to Caden." her dad says.
He left all his money to me... he left a fortune to me. I blink at the lawyer in front of me. The same lawyer who showed the letter. The same one who's intimidating but nothing I haven't dealt with. River himself. "He left you all of his funds. You will gain access to his fortune when you are eighteen... which is now. If you want to know he left his companies to... Ryder Bennett." he says looking at the page and squinting. "And he left you everything else... which is just money. He didn't have many houses or whatnots," he says.
He left me his money. Why the hell would he do that? What about Roxanne or... or I don't know... I guess I was all he had. A little bit of guilt slashes towards me, but I don't let it stay. He was two seconds away from beating me last night. He should be gone. Less to worry about. For everyone. He was a cruel and terrible person...
He would probably be proud that I killed him, the bastard. He was never once training me to be a killer, to be him. I guess the beatings were enough hatred to kill him. I killed him. I killed River Golbach. The company hogged the ex-chief of police. I killed him. Murdered him. Like he murdered my parents.
